This got over-shadowed in his bungling of his Puerto Rico trip but it seems like huge new evidence it's a big piece of the puzzle we'd been theorizing about & know we have confirmation. The question now is how/why did Russia specifically target MI & WI
It has been unclear until now exactly which regions of the country were targeted by the ads. And while one source said that a large number of ads appeared in areas of the country that were not heavily contested in the elections, some clearly were geared at swaying public opinion in the most heavily contested battlegrounds.
Michigan saw the closest presidential contest in the country -- Trump beat Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton by about 10,700 votes out of nearly 4.8 million ballots cast. Wisconsin was also one of the tightest states, and Trump won there by only about 22,700 votes. Both states, which Trump carried by less than 1%, were key to his victory in the Electoral College. ... One person with direct knowledge of the matter said that some of the ads were aimed at reaching voters who may be susceptible to anti-Muslim messages, even suggesting that Muslims were a threat to the American way of life. Such messaging could presumably appeal to voters attracted to Trump's hard-line stance against immigration and calls to ban Muslims from entering the United States.
shocking. Rex threatened to quit over the summer and Pence convinced him not too. I guess the rumors we heard over the summer were true as they always are.
Just leave Rex. It will never ever get better. Save your soul.

"Russia has opened a new battlefront with NATO ... by exploiting a point of vulnerability for almost all allied soldiers: their personal smartphones," The Wall Street Journal reports. The sophisticated equipment used to compromise soldiers' phones, including drones carrying surveillance gear, suggests state-level coordination.

Today at 12:15 p.m., Senate Intelligence Chairman Richard Burr (R-N.C.) and Vice Chairman Mark Warner (D-Va.) will hold a press conference "on the status of the Committee's inquiry into Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. elections."
The committee on Monday received a thumb drive of Russia-linked ads from Facebook, which today begins an advertising campaign promoting the company's nine-point plan to deter "election interference."
This whole Russian-purchased online advertising is truly rubbing salt in the wounds. My donations to HRC's campaign were actually refunded to my foreign bank card at some point, because apparently it was too much trouble to determine if they complied with FEC regulations.
At the moment, our local Democrats Abroad group is organizing a Halloween party at the end of the month. Anyone is allowed to attend, but due to FEC regs, only American citizens can pay for tickets. So when I bought the tickets for a group of our friends, the little ad hoc purchase form included the acknowledgement that:
I am a United States citizen or a permanent resident alien. This contribution is not made from the general treasury funds of a corporation, labor organization, or national bank. This contribution is not made from the treasury of a person or entity that is a federal contractor. The funds I am donating are not being provided to me by another person or entity for the purpose of making this contribution. I am at least 18 years old, the funds I am donating are my own personal funds and I am donating these funds knowingly and voluntarily.
ETA - Because heaven forbid that the Dems violate campaign finance rules by selling fundraising Halloween candy to foreign nationals!

Well that's fucking scary. (Then again I say that a lot lately)
Well that's terrifying. There is no good news that can come from a last-minute SoS announcement. Even his resignation. I'm no fan, but it was pretty clear that "bomb the shit out of NK" was not at the top of his to-do list, and I'm pretty sure that's the current WH plan to boost the admin's approval ratings.
Before the NRA poured more than $30 million into Trump’s election, it met with a notorious Kremlin hardliner, allegedly to discuss a rifle competition.

Honestly I would not be surprised if it is just Tillerson coming out to make complimentary statements about Trump and praise his intellect and savvy grasp of important issues in order to smooth things over after the story this morning that said Tillerson has issues with Trump and called him a moron.
oh geez I just had a thought. Is 45 sending him out there to praise him and say how much he loves being SOS. That article makes it seem like Rex walks his own tune.
if he's not resigning then he is for sure going to be asked about the Moron comment if he takes questions. He'll then have to lie and say 45 is awesome. I don't think it's a coincidence that today is the day he has an "announcement". They don't want this to blow up as it will.

It says so much about the world that I legitimately hope so. I hope that when that door opens, Rex Tillerson comes out with Sean Spicer style props to talk about what a bigly great job President Trump is doing on all the foreign things. Maybe he'll even take a page out of SHS's book and read us a letter from the president of Nambia asking if he can come on a state visit to the White House!
I hope he busts through the doors both at a time, throws down some very incriminating papers for the press to grab, and says “I’m outta here bitches!” And then puts on Biden sunglasses and strides out.
I’m getting bored watching doors
ETA: my version was SO much better than what he just did
