I'm doing some late night organizing and need a shoe solution. DH and I have separate closets, but they both have sliding doors. I can't store on the back of the door.
I have a bunch of Container Store shoe drawers. They're more expensive than the typical Rubbermaid shoe boxes, but these are perfectly clear, and most importantly you don't have to move a bunch of them to get to the shoes you want. .
I have a shoe rack from ikea. It's actually a bathroom bench, but it's great for shoes. Right now I have the shoes in shoe boxes on it, with the ones I wear most often just sitting out. It's not working for me, I think I need to invest in clear boxes so I don't have to open everything to see the shoes.
Although most of the shoes I wear most often are in a pile in the living room or in my car (I wear driving shoes to commute)
The heels I wear at work generally live at work -- the lowest shelf next to my desk (which is almost floor-level) is where I store them. I bring them home over the weekend when I think I'll be wearing them for the weekend. So that's where my 10 or so most worn pairs of heels live.
We have three dressers in our bedroom, and I have flats lined up all along the bottom of them. That's where the flats I wear most live.
Then there are a bunch along the floor of my bedroom closet.
I have an overflowing shoe rack. Honestly, it's pretty bad right now, very piled up. But I have not other space to put a new one or to put shoes in our closets... Hmmmm. Maybe someone else will come along with a solution.
I have a shoe thing that hangs on the back of my closet door, but realistically the only ones that live there are ones I rarely wear. The rest are thrown in a pile at the bottom of my closet (if they are not worn in the current season), or thrown in a pile in my mudroom (for those currently in heavy rotation).
I'm just in the process of figuring this out in our new house...right now, I have them in their original boxes on a shelf. I'm contemplating springing for clear containers like the ones suggested by the pp's...I just need so many, though, that it's holding me back from just doing it already.
I used to have a floor rack, but that won't work now that I have toddlers with access to my closet.

Thanks for the ideas! The way my closet is set up with double rods, my clothes all brush the ground, so I'm wondering if something on the floor would get lost because clothes would be covering it. Maybe I'll take over dh's closet...
My current storage is not helpful to you, but I used to use shoe racks like this.
I have a shoe rack like this for my everyday heels and booties. Tall boots are on the top shelf of my closet. Heels/wedges that I don't wear regularly are in the plastic clear container store boxes. And then my flats are in one of these: www.target.com/p/closetmaid-15-unit-organizer-white/-/A-12193814

Most of mine are lined up along the floor of the closet in our master bedroom.
All of my casual sandals/flip-flops are stored in a clear bin under our bed.
Boots and shoes that are worn in heavy rotation are kept in the entryway closet. DH essentially built a shoe bench for this closet where we can store shoes two-by-two on the top of and below it.

I have something like this that expands and then one that's taller. I also have 2 of those shoe hanging things that hang in the closet. Then I store some shoes in shoe boxes on the shelf. Usually boots, hiking shoes, or other shoes I don't wear regularly.
I have an over the door container. It has changed my life. I used to shove them all under bed, so every morning I'd be on my hands and knees rifling through a messy jumble while fighting my down comforter. The new system is better
