I was just watching my local news, and the anchor said something about "nukular" warheads. WTF? The George Bush pronunciation of nuclear makes you sound uneducated. So I sent a Facebook message to the local news station requesting that she correct her pronunciation in the future. (This news station is always talking about "join us on Facebook!" so I figured this was a good way to contact them.)
I think I was pretty polite, but maybe this puts me in the crazy bin. LOL. Here's the message:
I enjoy watching Local News Station, but I need to request that Anchor learn how to pronounce the word "nuclear." The way that George Bush says it is not correct, and it makes me cringe to hear "nukular." It makes you sound uneducated, and I know that's not true! Thanks and keep up the great reporting! RBP
I know this pronunciation bugs the crap out of people, but I find it kind of funny when people get up in arms over it. Only because I grew up in Oak Ridge TN, where they build as design nuclear weapons and the home of the graphite reactor (the first permanent reactor, after the Chicago pile). I'd say about half the folks in our town, including many who are in the business of designing weapons, say nukular. I grew up saying it that way, and even had plans to be a nuclear engineer (was admitted to a program, but my friend's father who was one, talked me out of it).
Lurker here... I'm a tv reporter myself, it's probably best to send the note to the anchors email since it's likely that the Facebook page is run by some random person. And although she may have just made a mistake it's more helpful than a lot of the random emails we get!

Yeah that's probably a good idea. I was in a hurry getting ready for church and FB was the first mode of communication that I thought of, haha. I'll try e-mail if I don't get a response via FB (or if I hear her saying it again!)

My confession is that I can't really tell a difference between the pronunciations. I just spent a obscene amount of time listening to Bush say it and pronunciation in the Webster dictionary and I am still not sure I hear a difference.
You know you've made it when your GBCN name becomes a colloquialism a la "pulling a gypsy" or "pulling a casmgn."
Along similar lines, I've always thought that I would like to write a textbook so that students could say "hey, do you have your Peppers with you?" LOL

lol. That probably explains why so many people mispronounce it!
The proper way is new-clee-ar. The wrong way is nu-kyoo-lur.
