I have a wedding to go to the middle of next month. It's an outdoor wedding, and mid-October here could be warm, or it could be quite chilly and in the 50's. The bride originally told me semi-formal. Here are the facts:
Seating will be on hay bales
Bridal party will be wearing boots
MOB & MOG will be wearing cocktail dresses
There is no indoor alternate location
It's at 4 pm.
The reception will be brisket and baked beans
What should I wear to this? I originally had a cute black, white and red dress picked out to wear, but now I'm thinking boots and jeans, but that doesn't seem right either.
If she said semi-formal I don't think I'd wear jeans. Can you do like a sweater dress and tights with boots (if it is chilly) or a sundress and boots (if it is warm)? If you think you'd be more comfortable in pants maybe you could do some black pants a nice top?
Yeah, I wouldn't wear a cocktail dress to sit on hay bales. WTF? I would go with a casual dress of appropriate season (i.e., sweater dress if it's cold). I wouldn't wear jeans to a wedding.
I think your over thinking this. Seating is on hay bales, doesn't that tell you what to wear? I went to 2 weddings over the summer same thing, jeans +nice shirt. Food was DH smoking briskets and smoking other meats. Expect large smoker and bbq stuff going on.

I agree with this. Sweater dress + tights + boots seems perfect. Surely they will have blankets on the hay bales so people aren't just sitting on scratchy hay.

The fact that the bride is telling people to wear semi-formal attire to sit on hay bales tell me that she might not have thought this through.

No, they are not planning on having blankets. The lack of planning for this wedding is scary.
I went to a wedding with a similar county theme. The groom and groomsmen actually wore jeans! It surprised me but it totally fit them. I would say jeans and a nice top would work. Cowboy boots would be a plus if you had them. Do you have any friends going to the wedding? You could ask them what they plan to wear.

I went to a similar wedding last summer--but they did have cute cloths laid on the hay bales that matched their colors. Hay/straw in bales isn't really that prickly. It was summer, so I wore a maxi dress and felt perfectly appropriate.
I think the sweater dress and riding boots or sundress and some type of boots, depending on temperature, are perfect suggestions. Jeans are definitely not ok based on what the bride said and the bridesmaids are wearing.

That green dress with boots is cute and is exactly the kind of thing I was coming in here to recommend. Here are two more looks. Tights would look cute with both of these if it's going to be chilly.
Unfortunately, I don't know. It's from somewhere on this blog www.moodboard.typepad.com but I don't know specifically where, and I haven't been able to find it within the site. I repinned it back when I was first using Pinterest and hadn't yet learned to verify that the link is to the specific post and not to the main page before pinning. If you happen to find out, will you please let me know? Thanks!
Lol I resent this. I think MM actually did pretty well on this challenge and I even like a few of the options.
I am just posting to add that I would probably bring a wrap and sit on that. Seems less cumbersome than a blanket.

MM always think they do well, and they don't. I am no fashionista, but IME sweater dresses don't provide enough structure and so I don't think it would be a good choice for RR.

I'm sure RR knows what works for her and what doesn't, and how to provide proper support for her figure, whether it's via a garment or an undergarment.
RR, do you have a photo of the original dress you picked out? It might work and then you won't have to buy anything (unless you would have had to buy this).
