Ben was just a baby and I was so, so happy he'd know Obama as his first president. I woke him up for the speech, just to hold him while I listened. I'm going to share that story and the video with him. Thanks for posting!

DD2 was born in mid August. I was taking my sweet time sending off the birth announcement before the election bc I didn't mind if it was Obama or Clinton. When she lost, I sent that puppy in right away with a note to the staffer to pretty please make sure we got one from that administration and not from the assholes. I hope whoever read it got a laugh.
I shouldn’t have watched that after drinking a couple of beers. I’m legit crying now.
I remember that night so clearly. I was refreshing Facebook on my desktop computer in the den while the tv was showing the returns in the living room. I ran back and forth all night. When it was announced that he won, I jumped up and down and cried. I lived in VA and had done GOTV with my mom and we talked to SO many people who were first-time voters. I met new citizens who told me they were so proud to cast their first ballot for Obama.
Honestly, it was one of the best political nights I can remember, and I’ve been an election night fan since I was a kid (my parents let me stay up past bedtime for NYE and election night)
Facebook on this day reminded me of this. There was celebration on my college campus until all hours of the night. And this was in Kentucky, so not exactly the bluest pace I could be. It was my first presidential election and I was proud to vote for someone I really believed in.
I had just that week moved to Denver (again) from Japan. And I celebrated at a private club where I was introduced to all these people (basically the gay political machine in Denver) as the sort of straight friend lol. The energy in that room was amazing.
Then 8 years later I was sitting in a hotel bar crying. Again about to move. (3 other moves happened in between. Don't blame my nomadic state!)
I was an RA in a freshman dorm that year. We had an election night party to follow the coverage, including a map that we colored in as states were called. I'll never forget the palpable energy in the room when the election was called for Obama. Within minutes, hundreds of freshmen (from two connected high rise dorms, each holding about 700 students) began to stream out of the building. They gathered in the street, celebrating. They were soon joined by freshmen from two other dorms on the same block. It was an impromptu block party.
My supervisor decided to head to the roof to get a better view. Since I happened to be there, and had a camera, she invited me to come with her so I could take pictures for her. I'll never forget the scene. Hundreds, if not close to 2000, of students congregated in the street, celebrating. Even from 18 stories up, we could still hear their chants perfectly. After about 30-45 minutes of partying in the street, the students started a spontaneous parade to the main drag in the city two blocks away. We watched from above as they paraded around the city.
Now I have all the feels. My Grandma got to stand on stage behind then-candidate Obama at a campaign rally and she was so incredibly happy.
On a semi-related note, I bought grandma a copy of Chasing Light (candid photos of Michelle Obama) and it's absolutely beautiful. I want a copy for myself. They're just such wonderful people.
