Actually not too sad since it was scrappy and $350 four years ago. I planned on getting another cheap laptop until I read about the Windows tablets coming out. I am intrigued. Its hard to do much research on my phone or Kindle so tell me about tablets. There are so many coming out and the prices aren't listed yet. I hope I can make it a month without my laptop. I can use DH's but its hooked up to the Tv now.
I am not waiting on one but I know my sis is. She doesn't have much need for a laptop anymore and just wants a laptop. Most of the new ones will be out soon. The cost is going to be competitive. I just might ditch my desktop one of these days!

We have the google nexus tablet. I like it, it is easy to use and I find myself picking it up a lot. I mostly play games on it, fiddle around with fertility friend, and check the weather or look something up quickly. I also like it to show people pictures. ETA: I use it for google reader a lot too.
I still use my laptop for facebook (which I could easily put on the tablet), forums, and work related things. I think we paid about $200.
I don't think you can declare the Surface a failure when it hasn't even been released yet. Previously tablets running Windows have been made with a myriad of random hardware from any number of companies. But the Surface is Microsoft finally venturing into Apple territory by having full control over the hardware and the software. I think it has a lot of potential.
Full disclosure, I work for MS, and I'm getting one for free "sometime" in the future. I have not seen or used a Surface as of yet, but I am looking forward to getting one, and I would probably be buying one even if I wasn't getting one for free. I say probably because I'm really not on the market for a tablet at the moment, and for me a tablet is really a luxary/splurge.
I wouldn't replace a laptop with a tablet either. I wouldn't even replace my desktop with a laptop but I need a super powerful computer and my laptop gets way too hot with a quad core in it. But to answer your question, yes I am waiting on the windows. We travel a lot and I think a tablet would make working on the road easier as opposed to pulling out a giant laptop...but we'll see how hard it will be to work on a little screen.
We tried one of those tablets with the apps and it sucked so we returned it. Waste of $600 (with keyboard), but last week groupon had a deal on them for $250 with the keyboard so we snatched one just for the hell of it. Good enough for internet browsing.
If you don't need it to do very much, and you like games/facebook/apps, etc. get the iPad. If you actually need it to do work, I'd go with the Toshiba Thrive.
