These were the years when the heritage of genius and beauty was recast as a bunch of Dead White Males. Western civilization slipped from a lineage of reason and talent, free inquiry and unsuppressed creativity, into “Eurocentrism,” one group’s advance at the expense of others, women and people of color. ... I spent my 20s in a grimy room reading Dante, Wordsworth and Nietzsche—only to find when I went to campus that my intellectual giants had become objects of suspicion and derision.
When you're accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression.
Also, when Gauguin and Picasso were looking for unsuppressed creativity, they exploited the works of non-Europeans so this guy isn't even knowledgable about western civilization.
I mean, this guy sounds like such an asshole, but I found myself really wondering why the fuck he’s a professor. He seems to despise young people. He seems to have no intellectual curiosity beyond the dead white guy classics. And Trump is a fucking moron with the intellect of a kindergartner, according to his own Cabinet.

Cool story, bro.
The notion that dead white guy politics somehow AREN'T identity politics makes me so angry.
Everyone has a life story, a wellspring of pain and triumph that won’t yield easily to debate. Trump has violated them too deeply.
I didn't know it was possible, but this guy is even worse than a typical Trump supporter. He seeks to understand and acknowledge those hurt by Trump (even his own mother), but supports him anyway.
Oh, and this guy isn't much of an intellectual. Guess what dude, intellectuals don't dismiss new information out of hand because it's uncomfortable or contradicts their worldview. I'm sure it's unpleasant to discover your heroes weren't the people you'd hoped they were. Maybe you should figure out how to cope with that info instead of making sure that if you hurt, everyone else does too.
I have two degrees in European history so I don’t need this dude to tell me about it. And I really, really don’t need him to tell me why we all need to shut up and listen to how cool he thinks it is to have a leader tout “western civ.” News flash, dick head: Everyone knows that by “western civilization” you and 45 mean “white.”
Yeah, I have a PhD in European history, and I promise we still talk about Dante. We just also happen to talk about gender and race. Sorry that offends you, asshole.

I think this guy IS the typical Trump supporter, at least the white suburban sort that helped hand him his victory.
He’s not dancing around his choice pretending his vote was about economic angst or dying coal belt jobs. He’s saying front and center: I voted for the white guy who believes in white superiority. Sounds like the typical Trump supporter to me.
I also don’t see any evidence that he’s willing to “understand and acknowledge those hurt by Trump;” everything he writes is dripping with disdain. I want to like his message (don’t argue about politics — seek to understand where people are coming from) but it rings hollow to me. It feels like a pat on the head.
I don’t know too many blue state Trump supporters (by choice), but the ones I’ve had the misfortune to meet are EXACTLY like this.

I don't think the typical Trump supporter is putting a lot of thought into how Trump is hurting people. Not that they can be totally unaware of it, but they don't want to think about it and turn a blind eye. Plus if people tell themselves often enough that their vote was about the economy, healthcare, supreme court nominee, ect... They'll start to believe themselves.
This guy wrote an entire paragraph about how Trump hurts his own mom then goes on to say why he still supports Trump. I think it takes a particular kind of callousness to write out how your actions are hurting the people closest to you, but you stand by them.
ETA Or maybe he's just terrible in a different way than many Trump supporters are terrible.
