I'll definitely watch at some point, although I don't know when.
I binged-watched Season 1 while MH was away on a guys' trip. We have nothing like that planned for the foreseeable future. He expressed interest in watching Season 1 with me but never got around to it, and anyway this is the kind of show I'd prefer to watch alone. At this rate I might not get to it until a possible business trip I have in April.
I was going to binge watch today but we ended up with a snow day so DD is home. DH will be home shortly and I plan to disappear to our room and start watching
Ha, I asked H today if we could watch it - well I told him I would be watching it this weekend - and he was like "but I feel like I need to see Season 1 first" (I watched it without him.)
We only have one TV and we usually watch everything together so I told him I thought he could figure things out pretty quickly, lol.

I'm going to watch it, but I am less excited about it because all signs point to this season being Philip-heavy. I fucking hate Philip. I wanted to punch him in his stupid, racist, whiny face throughout the whole first season.

Samesies. The ladies at gofugyourself have similar fears, and large chunks of season one could be read as Philip-centric foreshadowing.
Probably but it’s accurate this is his prime asshole period and I think ignoring that would be dumb.
I am hoping it will be handled as much from her perspective as possible and as harsh on him as possible (he deserves it) but I don’t think they could ignore the elephant in the room.

juliej, yeah, the Fug Girls and I are in total agreement. I followed along with their recaps last year, and I’m looking forward to their old school “real” recaps this year.
I think one of my biggest issues with the show (aside from Philip) is how little time we actually get with Elizabeth where she’s not reacting to someone (usually male) in her life. I’m hopeful that we get something more out of her besides looking worried about things in season 2.

I haven't seen the actor in anything else, so I'm worried that I'm going to hate him based on this character.
OMG, dude, you signed up for this! You knew literally everything before you agreed to this life!

He expected an Albert and Victoria situation where he would be the power and she would be the symbol. He thought he could persuade her to let him do more and be more the way Albert was and when it was made clear it wasn’t going to happen he pouted.

Matt Smith played The Doctor in Doctor Who for five seasons. Aside from The Crown, that is probably his best known role.
I've watched episode 1 so far. I thought it was well done, I had been a bit worried/curious how they'd handle this since it came out that it would be more Phillip heavy.
As much as whiny Phillip bugs me I agree that they really couldn't ignore his issues/the rumors any longer.
I’m only two episodes in but so far late 50s. It’s basically just picking up Where season 1 left off - remember how at the end they were planning his 5 month tour to Australia etc? Now he’s on that tour.
I don’t mind the Phillip-centric part of it. Even if he knew how minimal his role would be once she became queen, they didn’t expect her to become queen for some time. I don’t think he expected to spend the vast majority of his life as DoE to her queen. And he did expect to play a different role.
nicbreeful Olivia Coleman for the next 2 seasons. No info on the final actress, they just announced Olivia last month. Yeah Netflix is putting massive money into The Crown so they planned it out.

I think Matt Smith doesn’t get a lot of credit for his acting skills, in large part due to his most famous role being the Doctor.
I loved him as the Doctor. If you can find the old series “Party Animals” he was “loveable” in that, too. He does such a good job with Prince Phillip that I find myself hating him, lol. Same with the weirdo role he had in that Ryan Gosling film. If you have time seek out some of his other work. I really wish he would do more mainstream shows and movies.
I think Matt Smith is amazing as Phillip. I hate him, think he’s an asshole, think he’s attractive, and understand his POV. It takes a good actor to pull all that off. Prince Phillip is an actual person and like all people, had good and bad qualities and he obviously has some pretty bad qualities.

Matt Smith does a really good job playing Philip, I agree. But there are roughly 3 million shows about whiny rich dudes whose lives don't turn out the way they expect. I was excited that there was going to be a show with a strong female as its central character, and season 1, IMO, just didn't deliver that. I know the first season was mainly around how upended her entire life was and just how unprepared she was for being monarch, but Elizabeth felt like a supporting character in her own story much of the time. Hopefully, season 2 will fix that as she gets more confident in her role.
5kcandlesinthewind but that’s historically accurate. She comes into her own in time but the first decade or so is a lot of her finding her way. If they stay accurate yes there should be a shift this season as she begins to gain the confidence she needs to take control.
Keep in mind A) she wasn’t educated or prepared for this until she was 10 and even then her only significant education was on the British constitution. She received the education of an aristocratic woman who would marry well and have children and host parties. She is facing men who went to the best schools in England and she doesn’t want to look a fool challenging them. It takes her time to realize she is very smart and she can speak up.
B) her first PM was Churchill nobody holds their own against Churchill.
C) she was 25 and expected a couple decades to pass before she had to be Queen.
As she gains experience she gains confidence and comes into her own.
But the reality is she was thrown in feet first and floundered for a while.
So far the show has been very true to the reality if not the specifics of how things went so I expect we will start to see the Confident in Charge Queen as we move forward this season.
