I want to give someone a thank you for doing something nice, and was told he likes, and I quote, "red wine."
So, what's a good red wine that most people who like red wine like? (Cue Paul Giamatti in Sideways saying, "I ain't drinkin no fuckin merlot") Shiraz? And can you recommend a specific one, in the $30'ish range (or less)?
I feel like Cabernet or any Supertuscan are my go-tos for gift wine---kind of universal. I can't recommend a specific one, but in that price range you will probably not pull a dud.
Your best bet is to go to a good wine store and ask. Not BevMo but any small, independent shop should be able to help you find something if you tell them your budget. Not all wine is distributed everywhere so you will make yourself crazy trying to hunt down very specific brands.

This. Every time I see wine recs on the boards, I can never find them by me. Your best bet is to go to a wine store and ask somebody who knows about wines.
