I have my last final of the semester in 13 hours and I've done absolutely no studying aside from reading my notes. The midterm was fairly easy so I am hoping that the final is the same.
Going to see SW: TLJ in IMAX after my final. I am dragging one of my friend with me and that poor girl is going to have to listen to me blather on and on about Kylo after the movie. I've been slowly trying to convert her to the dark side for years.
[Denizcan James : Matt Damon is the Lena Dunham of men.]
Oh wow, what did Matt Damon do? I thought he was a fairly decent person but maybe not after that comparison.
Not sure if he came out with a new gem, but He can't stop running his mouth about things that basically boil down to #notallmen and also but what about their art with a hefty side of mansplain. He had a bullshit answer when put on the spot about diverisity on Project Greenlight. And I forget what else but I feel like there was something before he was a dismissive dick to Effie Brown.*
He says nice things about teachers. He thinks of HIMSELF as a good guy. Progressive. Etc. He probably listens and learns.
*apparently he claims that was made much worse in the editing room. But that kinda kills me cuz...isnt it his show??

I just need to survive one more class party today and then all of my December obligations are DONE.
My main obligation is our big angel/giving tree for students in our school and it wrapped last night. I have to deliver extras (science kits, crafts, books, games) to our local hospital this week sometime but that's it! I'm actually kind of looking forward to that.
This is related but I didn't want to start a whole new post. The way ours is set up is each person on the tree has three tags, one is clothing, the other two are toys. Then when they come to pick up we have all the toys set up like a store and they have vouchers for the number of gifts they get to choose and the clothes are marked with their number so they just pick those up. Some people get upset that their stuff doesn't go to the kid they ostensibly buy for. Organizationally, I see arguments on both sides for what would work better. Ultimately though, I think it's good for the people shopping to get to choose. It seems like it gives them input into what they are giving as a gift. Thoughts?
eclaires- The Poors get choice and get treated like equals? They don't have to take whatever is offered? I like the way your org does it. Usually people know what is best for themselves and their families.
eclaires, my answer depends on how it is received. Do people like being able to pick? Is there usually a discrepancy in the gifts? Like if someone buys a more expensive gift and someone else always buys something cheaper (Rose Art crayons!). Is it a matter of who gets to pick first - they get the "better" gifts?
I guess I'm just not sure of the point of picking a tag with a toy on it that correlates to a specific family if the family doesn't get that gift. Just have tags with toy requests/suggestions for people to pick.
If the way it is set up works smoothly for the people receiving the gifts, then I wouldn't worry about it and I think its fine. If there are issues, then I might consider changing it up.
I wouldn't change it because people want to make sure their gift is properly appreciated (which is what it sounds like is happening.)
also there is a round of interviews this week for a significant promotion at work and I'm annoyed. Who does interviews during a week when most people have leave scheduled? I have mine on Thursday and I'm in the office today for my usual office day and the people who have their interviews are stressing me out. They've spent days studying. I'm like....I was going to like at stuff this afternoon for a bit? The people doing the interviews aren't usually here in my office so its just a big to-do all around.
I think there is a .001% chance I will get this which further stresses me out because - why am I stressed out about a job I wont get?? I also don't know that I want it because it means losing a telework day lol.
But given the current administration, I don't know when they'll do these promotions again so I feel like I need to give it my best shot. Sooooo......I apparently need to study up for this.
I received emails yesterday at work that two packages I'd ordered from Target and Bloomingdale's were delivered to my house. I get home - they're not there. They weren't on the side porch or in the bushes or anything, either.
Hopefully they show up today. It's something for my mom and my only present for my brother's GF. I hope nobody stole them ... I've lived here five years and never had a problem so I'm not really thinking theft.

So most of the toy tags are pretty general categories (legos, barbies, nerf, baby dolls, etc.), and there is a wide selection. If things are sent in that are smaller, grinchy gifts, we bundle them with larger options to make equitable choices for the families. We always have leftovers and even at the end of the night, there were tables full of each option. We put extra items on our tree to allow for things that don't make it back or for bundling gifts that aren't very generous. We work with a local church that does a similar set up and we are typically their last shopping event, so they will also pull from their leftovers anything that we think is light - like if we have a low number of baby dolls, they will bring some baby dolls over. Or legos, whatever. Then the leftovers are donated to various charity orgs because we don't have storage space. Some are going to the hospital like I mentioned but a lot of the toys go to local charities that have year round shopping set ups attached to food pantries and the like for families to shop for their children's birthdays.
I'm personally taking just two categories (arts/crafts & science kits) to the local children's hospital and it is a large moving box full of leftovers. Probably at least 60 big boxes of crafts/science kits.
IF a tag has a specific request (like this year, we had a request of Smurf stuff) vs a general category, it is packaged with the clothes vs. out on the tables and then the family gets one less voucher to shop with (since the toy is already in there). And then if gift cards are requested, we package those with their materials that they get when they check in (vouchers/family number) so the gift cards don't get lost.
I think the families enjoy the shopping event? I mean, I don't know for sure, but the parents I helped seemed so excited to get to pick things for their kids. With things like Legos, for example, they may already have a set so the parent could know that and choose a different one.
eclaires gotcha. That makes sense and sounds equitable across the board. I was just picturing some families being able to pick like a scooter and another family gets stuck with something from the dollar tree, since we know people can be mean when it comes to buying angel tree gifts. but it sounds like a nice set up and like it works well for the people receiving the gifts, so I would KOKO.

If we didn't have tons of leftovers and didn't bundle gifts to make things equitable options, I think I'd be more concerned. It's more work for us, but overall, I feel like it allows families input and is probably more enjoyable for them and most likely to get kids what they want. I think the biggest thing we need to do is update some of our categories to offer better options for older kids to choose from.

Anybody feeling particularly witty today? feel free to offer suggestions on my thread on H&F looking for funny things to put on a finish line gift for my sister after her first 50 miler.
mryrcn - I'm anticipating once I have a clue what I actually want I'll be hitting you up on this....is that a thing you can make still? Like, i just ship you the cups and you make them cute? I don't know how you do that usually...
Come over to my office. We have cake, and cookies, and chocolate covered pretzels, and fruit. It's an xmas miracle!
Yes, it's vendor gift box season. We've got caramel corn and chocolate cakes right now.
We had brownies and cookies and a cheese plate yesterday. The cheeseplate went like lightning, which was nice because i"m not sure I'd have had the willpower for that. The brownies and cookies were pre-packaged and thus less appealing.
Freakin' being on a diet through the holidays. what was I thinkin??

We usually get big boxes of toffee and giant bricks of chocolate. They haven't shown up yet, though.

We were all running late today, so I left without showering or makeup.
I have a hair appointment tonight. Do I:
A) Go to the gym and shampoo/condition after a workout so she can see what my hair does on an average day. B) Go to the gym but not shampoo (just rinse the sweat off) since she's going to shampoo later but hair will be kinda gross. C) Not work out and show up with hair in a ponytail.
These are the decisions I'm focusing on so as not to freak out about other things.

So the tags on the tree aren't specific to the child? Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but my concern with this method would be that if Sally asks for a barbie she may get to the pick-up area late and then all the barbies have been taken and she has to pick a different toy. That seems like a bummer.

The weirdest thing happened to me yesterday. In the span of a few hours I got 5 different wrong number calls. It didn't seem like spoofers or scammers. It was different numbers, from different locations around the US, all seemed to be different people (mix of men and women), and all seemed to be genuine cases of a wrong number (woman calling from a daycare to ask if it was ok to give my child a bottle, a guy calling to confirm his booking of lodging for travel, etc.)
