I got a ticket earlier in the year for going 70 in a 60 on the highway - not a huge deal, or so I thought!
As a result, my car insurance is going from around $1400/year to almost $4k per year for myself and DH!! crazy!
Does this seem a little excessive? This is the only incident on either of our driving records, we have 2 cars for our household. Insurance is with Geico.
Needless to say, I will be calling new insurance companies before our policy renews next month
Wha!? That's insane! Did you go in to court to try to get the fine reduced or take defensive driving (if that's an option) to reduce the points? You might look into ways to reduce the impact of the ticket on your record. I would absolutely ask your insurance company about it though and check around with others.

i am definitely going to call the insurance company to see if i can take a defensive driving course to lower the impact. 70 on the highway is not even that fast! the speed limit around here is usually 65, and i had just crossed into an area that was 60 about 2 weeks after i moved to this new state, and was caught in a speed trap
I feel your pain! I just got my first speeding ticket last year and it was because I was in a senior citizen zone ugh! Anyway i took a defensive driving course online and my insurance never went up. In fact it went down by 20 dollars. Anyway in the state of fl I think you can take up to a total of 10 classes in a life time within either a 6 or 12 month period in between. Or something like that. I hope it will work out for you! P.s. Sorry if i had any typos.I'm on my phone.
Ahh, did you go to safety driving school? b/c I have gotten speed tickets and always take the class even it is a pita so it does not go on my record and thus my rates go up. if you did not do the class and it is on your record, then it's kinda your fault that the rates went up. if you took the class and still went up, then I would look for a new carrier.

This makes no sense. A driver improvement class will reduce your points, but it sure as hell won't keep a speeding ticket from showing on your record.

It does in my state. There's a statute on it, so its very state dependent. Its a specific type of plea here.

That is ridiculous. If you haven't yet gone to court, ask about taking defensive driving to dimiss the ticket. If you already went to court, you can still get a discount for taking the course.

My husband has more speeding tickets than pretty much everyone I know combined, and all he has on his license is one nonmoving violation. I think it largely depends on the state.

I would probably look at other companies just to see what their quotes are. I remember when I first got my car that Geico was pretty expensive, because I was a new driver.
That does seem like a lot. When I got my ticket when I was 18, I had to pay $90 per year for about 4 years to pay for the points on my license, but I don't even think the rate itself went up. I would call around for sure.
