Yesterday, my Lila started throwing up. She had gotten into the trash and when she threw up there was plastic pieces. Thinking, oh shit, what if she has a blockage? took her into the e-vet.
She did have a blockage but it wasn't the plastic. It was cancer. But the throwing up was unrelated to the cancer or the plastic. She was in a diabetic crisis. She showed signs of kidney and liver damage that they were about 50/50 sure if it had to do with the diabetes or another disease which they thought might be possible.
I could admit her for 5 days to stabilize her to hope to get her levels back to normal but it wasn't a guarantee. And then if she was stabilized, we could address the long term care. After that, biopsies for the mass in her abdomen. But her calcium levels were so high that they were positive it was malignant and spreading.
I don't get it. She was in for her check up like 6 months ago. The vet said that sometimes this happens. They don't act or look sick at all and then it just hits suddenly.
Even if we talked long term care, she was 12. And I hate that this was a factor, the vet said it could easily hit 10-15k. The 5 day care to stabilize was estimated at $5300 alone.
I spent about an hour with her just talking with her and telling her I loved her so much and to look out for her little brother up there and I'd see her someday soon. Then the vet came and I held her and she fell asleep for the last time.
I can't believe this is happening. Everything is too quiet now.
I'm so sorry. I know how hard it is to make that call when there's a "maybe we can get them stable but then we have to deal with x,y and z" thrown at you. Our last dog was in a similar situation and it was gut wrenching. Hugs to you!
