He HAS aged well. No drinking or smoking ever probably helps. The Mormon lifestyle does wonders for the skin
Cheeto doesn't smoke or drink either but look at him.
12 cans of Diet Coke and 4 Big Macs for lunch are awful for the skin. Also, being a truly evil human leeches youth out of your pores (see: Steve Bannon)

I'm always astounded at how optimistic you guys make me feel by comparison. I think that there's a reason 45 doesn't want Mittens to run.
And one thing that I think Mitt has going for him is that he has sat out the past couple of elections (I don't think he's run since '12), so maybe he's a little above the fray on the Russian stuff. So he may be less motivated to sweep things under the rug.
Mittens is basically Jeff Flake. He'll give the occasional speech about decency and say that Mueller needs to do his job, but at the end of the day, he'll vote for the same piece of shit legislation and judges that the rest of the donor-coddling, Nazi sympathizing assholes in his party do.

I agree he’s mostly talk but I think he’s a little better than Flake because he’s not a total idiot on policy as much as I disagree with him. Flake is not very smart. I used to work with Romney a lot when he was governor and he was annoying af but not a dull bulb.
And strongly disagree that he’s as bad as Hatch. Hatch actually used to be a little more reasonable but he’s gotten really awful in his old age. Romney won’t be some bipartisan hero or champion or anything and I expect him to vote with his evil colleagues on all of their evil little plans but any Republican would do that, and the seat will be filled by a Republican so it might as well be him.
"So Al Gore is allowed to do an Oscar winning documentary, Bernie Sanders is allowed to belittle Democrats, Mitt Romney is allowed to run again, but Hillary Clinton should knit them all sweaters for the winter?"
As soon as I saw the first Romney speculation tweet, I shouted, “But Clinton should take up knitting?!”
Something I like about Mitt is he's pretty rich in his own right, and I think some of the issue with these idiot Rs is wanting or needing more money, Trump included. Some of that is campaign related, which he may end up being beholden to, too, but I think he's less at risk.
I guess I'm resigned to the fact that there will be elected Rs and I'd at least like ones who seem to have some integrity and aren't in danger of blackmail from foreign nations. I also think that compared to Trump and many others, Romney might actually be a halfway decent human. He seems to at least care deeply about his wife and family, so he seems capable of feeling some reasonable emotions. I cannot say I have the same impression of many others from the R party right now.
It's a low bar, obviously. And of course he will vote for shitty policies. But I think he will actually be more of his own man than Jeff Flake (low bar) and will ultimately be better than Hatch, who I think has begun to suck even more over the years.
I'm no fan of Romney, but remember during the 2012 election when he said the biggest external threat to the US was Russia and everyone, including myself, laughed at him?
I'd forgotten until just now about Ann Romney's health. I had been under the impression that that was why Mitt stepped away from public life after the 2012 election. The senate rumors sure are strong, but I have to wonder about that.
McMullin should run, but he basically endorsed Romney on Twitter already.
Romney is turning 71 this year and it’s unlikely he will run for POTUS again. McMullin should run because he’s young enough to have a future, potentially more successful run for higher office.
I'm so done with old people. Really. Even the old people that I like.
This is off topic, but there was a story on NPR today about a campaign against ageism in the workplace. 50 years ago, the law was put in place to prevent discrimination based on age of anyone over 40. They commented on how 40 seems so young, but at the time, 40 was considered old. Then the story goes on to talk about all these people in their 60s and 70s facing discrimination. Like, ok, age discrimination is bad and I certainly don't want people kicked out of their jobs when they need them... but a lot of the comments from these people were about how they are better at their jobs than people right out of college. But people right out of college need jobs too! And they can't learn anything if they don't get jobs in their fields. I kind of get it, but it also irritated me because it just proved the point that this generation is way overstaying their welcome in the job market and making it more difficult for younger people to advance. Like, 40 was once the now 60-70!

Mitt met with orange foolius when begging for a job. If he were a senator he'd be less beholden. He's still a terrible person, but he might be able to be hid own kind of terrible

Maybe I'm naive on this, but I think Mitt wanted that job so he could be the adult in the room--this was a point where all sorts of cretins were being floated as SOS and he thought he could be a saner option.

Back when we still thought having "an adult in the room" would matter.
I think Romney will be better than Hatch but I don't think he's going to be the savior of the 2018 Republican party like many seem to think.

Yeah, I mean, don't get me wrong, I think that Mitt is a whole different animal than Trump and is likely a better person than Trump but I still expect that he would do a lot of Lindsey Graham-like 'concern' and hand wringing over things that Trump does, but ultimately do nothing.

I think he’s just kinda power hungry and looking out for #1. Which honestly is a trait I can get behind because I do think it would moderate his (non-vote) actions, although probbaly not his positions, were he to become Senator.
It’s also why I’m convinced he’ll be running for the seat. He’s being anointed and I don’t see him passing that up, it’s not his style.

And there can't be a savior if a bunch of people think there's nothing to save the Republican Party from. In the eyes of 30% of the American electorate, Trump was the savior of the Republican Party. Nothing to save it from now.
Trump has so lowered the bar that Mitt looks like a good guy. He's still the 47% comment, "binders full of women," strapped his dog to the roof of his car, "corporations are people, my friend" guy who groveled for a job from Trump. And the rich are always happy to get richer. The only thing that would keep him in line is that he has a sense of public shame that Trump doesn't.

Most people have a sense of shame that Trump doesn't, but Marco Rubio and Paul Ryan are excelling at burying it deep, deep inside them.
The thing about congressional Republicans is that I expect them to pass all kinds of domestic policies that I find despicable. And I even expect that we will diverge on foreign policy (albeit less so). What is truly appalling is that they are just sitting idly by while he is threatening nuclear war on fucking Twitter. So unless Mittens is going to use his new Senate seat to pressure his House colleagues to draw up articles of impeachment or to marshal the cabinet to invoke the 25th, then who fucking cares? All the condemnation of Trump in the world is useless unless is backed up by action to get him out of office. And their refusal to do so is flabbergasting - Pence would still sign all their legislation but would be far less disastrous for our foreign policy.

'At least Paul Ryan has the decency to look dead behind the eyes.'
(Jon Lovett said that on the most recent PSA. That totally made me think of that.

I think this and Lovett complaining about Tommy and the band sending Jon and Emily the wine on their honeymoon were my favorite parts of the clip show.
