So I have my own stupid new homeowner question.... if the power goes out, will my gas boiler go out too and we’ll ha e no heat? Or does that work even without power?
We had power out for 3 days due to winds much less strong than are projected tomorrow a couple of months ago, but it was during the time when our boiler was broken so I couldn’t tell.
I know I should probably know the answer to this.
Depends on the set up I think. Some have an electric ignition. We have a gas heater and ours doesn’t work when the power goes out. You can get a generator to give you the electrical ignition.
8-12 would normally be NBD for CT but it’s the potential for high winds that has me nervous because I live in a town that’s very vulnerable to wind-related power outages. We had that freak storm in October and it took 4-5 days to get everyone restored. Going days with no heat in January would be much worse. The only bright side to winter power outages is that we can keep our food in the cold so it doesn’t spoil!

I just looked that up. Unfortunately apparently even oil and gas boilers still require electricity to run. I remember being freezing when we were without power after Sandy and it was sooo much warmer than this weekend will be.
I feel vaguely nauseous at the thought of having no heat when the high for Saturday is 5 degrees.
This wind issue is further up the east coast, right? Not in NYC?
I am north of NYC and it looks like we are expecting gusts “up to” 50 mph tomorrow, and 40 mph Friday. The weather.com forecast for NYC looks like the worst gusts will be more like 40.
RI infrastructure is for shit, though, so we may be more prone to outages and the like than someplace that has its act together.

It likely requires some electricity, so probably, unfortunately. Sandy was the 4th time we lost power for at least a week in a span of 3 years and the worst part of it was not having heat, despite it being gas. The people at the utility actually told me to boil big pots of water and turn on the office and open the door. I then told them to fuck off because i have an electric stove.

Stay safe!! Hopefully you dont lose power!
We also have an electric stove, which was a whole other panic when I realized how limited we will be for food options. We stocked up a little though.
On the other hand, we won’t lose another $100 of groceries like we did last time we lost power since we can just our freezer stash outside in the cold lol

Ha! Thats true!
Do you have a fireplace, at least?
It’s gas and definitely requires electricity! Ugh. We do have LOTS of warm clothes and blankets and no health conditions that make the cold dangerous (although I feel has for our itty bitty dog!) so relatively speaking we are doing better than some. We will hope for the best!
I'm not on the east coast but it's cold enough in the northern Chicago burbs that we had a major water line burst in our town and we're under a conserve water order because the intake pipe location in Lake Michigan is frozen. This doesn't happen, even here.

If its bad there will be places to go. After Sandy, there were a LOT of people parked in the floors of the malls with their phones and computers plugged in!
OK I had to take a wrench to get it off but the hose is off and the water is off. Also, I had a case of sparkling water in the trunk that I've been driving around for a week or so and when I went in to get it tonight they had exploded because they had frozen. There was slush everywhere.
I wouldn’t even know how to start cleaning that up. I’d probably just stare at it for a bit and then close the trunk and walk away. That sucks.
Philly officially has a snow day tomorrow and I’m 90% sure my school will be off Friday just for the cold- not sure about the district though. I’d usually be looking forward to a day of staying in pjs, watching movies and reading books under the blankets- but we literally just did that for 5 days straight, ending a day a go. These kids need to GTFO of this house.
FYI re: lost food in the fridge/freezer. Some homeowners policies have a food spoilage clause where you can claim it as a loss. We have USAA and it didn’t count toward our deductible. Was able to get $500 for contents of our fridge/freezer being a total loss after Irma this summer.

I’m in coastal Monmouth County NJ (right near Sandy Hook) and we’re under a blizzard watch until tomorrow night for wind. But it looked like the blizzard watch kind of went from Sandy Hook out to Long Island and didn’t include the city last map I saw. I’m hoping so so hard you make it out tomorrow!

I Once had this happen with a case of coke. Thankfully I found it before it melted.
About hoses, do people not regularly drain hoses after each use regardless temp? I was raised to do that, probably because of heat expansion.
To whomever asked if it was really that bad, some areas may experience hurricane force winds. That plus heavy lines can lead to widespread power loss which is incredibly dangerous in the cold.

The maps are weird. It's like the weather just magically knows exactly where the five boroughs are and knows to avoid them? In any case, I have to include us whenever they say "Coastal NJ" because I don't see how NJ could be affected but not SI even if we're a bit further in.
sushi, not everyone does. I was raised to drain the hose, remove the nozzle, and let the remainder of the water come out while winding the hose reel. H just winds and goes. I feel lucky if he remembers to turn the faucet off. Guess which one of us has to get a new nozzle every spring.

I really, really hope that it's not a bad drive to Newark on Friday morning from NEPA. We could cancel on NYC but I really want to see people and spend some time alone with my H (despite the fact that he's currently driving me crazy by biting his nails non-stop and the sounds is awful).

It’s very weird, but what I saw basically excluded the Jersey coast north of Sandy Hook and the 5 boroughs then picked up again on the island. I was surprised!
The problem with Arl is often staffing I've heard. If surrounding counties close, you've got a lot of teachers calling in so even with minor snow falls there's a domino effect as counties start closing.
