Just a few days ago the WaPo weather team was cautioning against pre-emptive "polar vortex" forecasting, explaining that it's the sort of language they only dole out during really extreme weather events.
Now we're at "bomb cyclone plus polar vortex." Excuse me while I burrow under five layers of blankets and don't come out again until March.

Okay they’re just trying to make weather a thing by giving it all these crazy names. And the Weather Channel is gonna hire the monster pickup truck announcer guy.
Just yesterday it looked like it was going to miss us. Now we are projected to get up to 8 inches. I agree that the extreme cold is making me really nervous.
So you’re saying global warming isn’t a real thing....?!?
Kidding of course! Be safe everyone!
I started to read the comments on this article. I stopped because most of the comments that I read were from climate change deniers with the opinion that this cold weather "proved" that "global warming" is not real.
WHY do I continue to read comments on these sites?!
My co-workers (I teach in upstate NY) were just saying Friday is a likely snow day and so I was just looking and they are predicting windchill around -32 midday Friday. That is some impressive wind. Can't wait.....ugh. Today my half of the building was without heat and my room was 47 degrees. Happy back to work!

Ugh I am not a fan. I think we are supposed to get about 8 inches plus a bazillion mile an hour winds. The good news is I think I’m going to work from home on Thursday. The bad news is I’m really worried we are going to lose power.
Dreading this now, we are a mile from the coast, north of Boston. The last time we had crazy winds, a couple months ago, we lost our power for two days and it wasn’t nearly as cold as it is now. And if we do lose power, it’s going down to -15 or whatever Saturday. Great!
It’s been so cold lately. I’m already sick of winter and that usually doesn’t happen until mid February

So, we're going to be driving from NEPA to NYC on Friday, hanging around the city until Saturday afternoon. Yay. That'll be a fun outing. I think I'm going to see if our hotel has a hot tub.

Is dripping outside faucets still a thing? It’s 13 out right now, but our snow is projected to be overnight and then temps will drop. Half of our neighborhood lost power last night (we were lucky) so I assume we are in danger when the winds start up.

Our plumber told us that this isn't really a thing.

Our plumber said to do it - no wonder we're all confused.
That, and leave the cabinet doors open if the sink pipes are on an exterior wall.
Our pipe that froze last time is a bidet line that isn't hooked up, so there is no way to run it.

Outside faucets and spigots should have the water turned off and be drained until the spring.
We don't drip our inside faucets with the exception of our kitchen one because the pipes are poorly located right over the bulkhead. We leave those cabinet doors open to let warm air circulate.
I really hope that the snow is a bust for us in NJ/NYC, this AM the news said 1 inch, and I am mentally preparing for as little as possible.
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ Storms like this give me serious anxiety since BB was born in the worst blizzard we had in years without warning. I keep feeling like something awful is going to happen other than record breaking cold and snow.
I don't usually get panicky about weather but I'm nervous at the idea of widespread power outages from tomorrow's storm followed by a plunge in temps again. If people's heat isn't operational and its ten below, that's a serious problem.
Ditto. I usually love big snowstorms, but this go around I'm very worried about losing power right before we plunge back to sub-zero temps.
