No it's a movie about a guy that graduates college and gives up all his money and possessions and travels around on trains and paddles to Mexico. He ends up going to Alaska for an adventure but the whole time he doesn't tell his family where he has gone. He kept a journal and a book was written about it and then a movie. Eddie Vedder did all the songs on the soundtrack

I agree that it's a great movie! I rented it on a whim without fully knowing what it was about and loved it. I've seen it several times since and I agree that the soundtrack is really good as well.

I didn't love the movie; I did love the book. I'm a huge Jon Krakauer fan. If you like the book, you should read some of his others. "Into Thin Air" and "Under the Banner of Heaven" are outstanding.
You should definitely do some reading aside from the book about Chris McCandless. He was a real character and there's a lot of debate over whether he was insane, autistic, just a regular guy who liked a simpler life, etc. And the neat explanation of his death from the movie and book aren't supported by facts. That, plus the bus he was in was so close to civilization it's fairly shocking he never saw anyone else while he was out there. And the fact that he could've crossed the river 1/4 mile down from where he tried...the facts about his life are just so bizarre, but fascinatingly so.
And if you start googling Chris McCandless, you'll also end up reading the tragic/fascinating stories of Carl McCunn, Everett Ruess, etc. Their stories will suck you in like an internet black hole!
