DH and I are going to NYC for a long weekend next month, for my birthday. We want to see a show and Hamilton tickets seemed crazy expensive at first, but now I’m re-thinking. These would be Saturday matinee tickets, orchestra center.
The play is coming to my city next year but I don’t anticipate being able to get tickets, and even if I do I’m sure they’d be at least $400/pc anyway. I like the theater but don’t see a lot of shows b/c it’s not DH’s thing (though he’d enjoy this as an NYC thing). If we don’t see Hamilton we’d probably see Book of Mormon.

We paid $200 per seat for center balcony (literally 5 rows from the top of the theater) in LA. Center Orchestra was going for about $1000 and this was during AmEx pre-sale.
$600 for center orchestra on Broadway seems reasonable to me.
Where are you looking at tickets? Stubhub's aren't that crazy from what I've seen.
I doubt they'll be that much near you. We have it coming here in March and tickets were about $100 each. Of course that was the cheap seats, but shows like this all still have good seats usually.
I think it depends on how much you like theater/Broadway. Dh and I LOVE theater. We have the entire Hamilton soundtrack memorized. We will see it some day; but I'm not sure even we would pay $1K+ for tickets. Book of Mormon is hilarious; so crude and bad and fabulous! I highly rec BoM.
Is it $600 per seat or total? That's too much money for me. We could book a vacation for $1200. Or do many other things that would be worth more to me than seeing a show. But if you have money to blow and it is important to you, then you do you.
Not sure if it even matters. Personally, I wouldn't pay that much to see any show. I actually DID see Hamilton in Chicago, and I thought it was amazing - maybe the best show I've ever seen. But I held out until I could buy tickets for face value, and then didn't buy the orchestra seats (I think we paid $68 each for ours, which were admittedly not good seats, though I don't feel like I missed out on anything).
If you can easily afford this and you want to do it, I do think the show is worth seeing and worth paying for. But that's way too much of my budget for ME to find enjoyable. Perhaps if I had a lot more money to play with I'd feel differently.

Even though you mention not seeing a lot of shows, look into what season tickets for your theater it's touring at would be. I ended up paying $250 each for season tickets to our theater and Hamilton is included as part of the season pass.

If I have the money, I would too. Hell, I was pretty close to dropping the same amount for resale tickets to the Seattle one and DH had to really talk to me on how ridiculous I'm being.

We saw Hamilton in NYC and had seats towards the top. They were $200 each, and they were perfectly good seats. I LOVED the show and will definitely try to get tickets when they tour locally in 2019. But I would not pay that much money for a show.

For us, yes, we paid that much per ticket for second row seats in November and it was amazing. Loved it so much.
But, my opinion may be skewed because we got the tickets after i got pregnant, and we had to cancel 3 family vacations where we were going to spend several times that amount so I felt like we still came out way ahead.
Eta: I've also been Hamilton obsessed for the past year so seeing it on Broadway was a dream come true. If you aren't into it already, I wouldn't pay that amount.

I saw Hamilton on broadway and it was a special experience for sure. $1200 would not be in my budget for a show right now, but if that does fit into your budget then I don’t think you would necessarily regret it. However, if that amount spent means depriving yourself of other trips or outings, then just wait until the next presale and get the tickets for a slightly less obscene price.
Hamilton is $600 per ticket. Good seats for Book of Mormon are $700 total, so sounds like that’s the way to go.
Unless you really are fine with splurging and not concerned about money, I wouldn't do either of these.
I've seen both shows in NYC. For Hamilton, I had balcony seats that I paid a little over $400 for the pair. View and seats were fine. I'd pay more for orchestra, but not $800 more unless it was a special (ie. original) casting or something.
I loved BoM, but I just wouldn't pay $700 for two tickets. Similar to a prior poster, we paid around $300 for those for a pair and had no issues with my seats.
