Even when I lived in Los Angeles I wore jackets all the time, lol. It gets chilly at night!
Express has nice faux-leather moto jackets, as well as blazers. If you're not looking for true warmth, I'd say a trench is the most versatile. You want something that hits mid-thigh or so to look ok with both dresses and pants.

I'm zero help because I've been living in my snowboarding jacket for months. One other thing I wear is a black classic looking wool peacoat. Need to dig through and see what I have for spring so I'll be watching thia thread!
I'm now looking for a replacement for my go to jacket (Cole Haan Signature red faux leather ). I've worn it so much the collar is cracking. I love it and wish I could find another
Well, it’s still fucking freezing so I’m still in my giant winter coat every day. When it’s above 60 I alternate between a black moto jacket, an olive green field jacket, a light pink gray (ashes of roses? Thorn birds? Anyone?) cotton bomber that’s very springy, and a basic short trench.
It's not really for going out, but other than my down winter coat, I get the most use out of my Burberry Bowpark rain coat. I wear it for a lot more than just rain. It's really versatile and durable, and has a removable liner so I can wear from the 40s to the low 70s if needed.

Yeah, as for what I own and wear:
COLD: - A long gray puffy Betsey Johnson winter coat with a faux-fur lined hood - A wool black/white plaid trench
COOL: - A tan Express faux leather moto - A stretchy quilted white/gray jacket from Athleta - A gray hooded sweatshirt material belted peacoat that I don't remember where I got it
I have this but I’ve zipped off the collar. It’s a pretty standard look in my area but the interior is quilted and much warmer than a windbreaker or trench. It’s my transitional spring/fall jacket right now. I bought mine for $50 at TJ Maxx.
For evening I have a vintage cashmere swing coat. It’s black with three large buttons and lined in red satin. I love it.

I would get multiple jackets/coats for different functions/occasions if you can swing it. Especially now as you are looking at off-season pricing.
I love leather jackets and as folks up thread mentioned I would look at a faux or real leather one. If you want a fancy one and don't mind pre-owned I would check out therealreal/threadup/ebay/poshmark.
Depends on your style preference too - drapey, moto, members only, etc.
I got my Rick Owens one from theRealReal and I love it.
Vince/Veda/Theory make nice ones on the higher end.
I live in my Michael Kors black leather moto jacket from October through April (unless it's a blizzard, noreaster, or polar vortex). I love how polished it looks.
I'm in Colorado so my "go to" is probably too heavy for where you are, but I love the Athleta responsible down coats. I have one that is long and black with a removable hood. It's mid thigh length and the waist can by synched from the inside so it looks structured and not frumpy.
It sold out this season so I can't link it. Overall I really love Athleta coats so maybe look there for a lighter option.
These posts always remind me that I have become totally utilitarian in my style. I wear a black Patagonia puffy coat like everyone else I know lol. It's warm in the winter, breezy in the spring! I also have 6 pairs of sorels. Man I need to get off this fucking mountain.
