"Officially Lake Arthur doesn't really have a police department. The village pays volunteer cops $20 a year to occasionally write speeding tickets. But our investigation finds, unofficially, Lake Arthur has amassed an underground police force with more than 100 gun-toting officers on its roster. None of them live in Lake Arthur. In fact, most don't even live in New Mexico."
THIS IS FUCKING NUTS. How are we supposed to train police officers if we're just handing out credentials like candy??
Knowing that town, I'm not surprised. I also wouldn't be surprised to find the towns right next door have the same thing. Good Lord.
I’m from the area and at first I was shocked but now I’m just mad and wondering how many villages in the area do the same thing. You know this chief told his buddies up in ABQ and they went to other small towns with the idea.

I see a travel guide opportunity here. "Come pretend to be a police man for a week in scenic Lake Author. Bring your guns and your fake uniform. Have fun, while scaring the shit out of local citizens." This is insane. Volunteer fighters in some areas, I can see, this is something else.
Not remembering whether we talked about this here or I read it locally, so my apologies if it is a repost. Yuma CO is not anywhere close to a destination for a billionaire.
