i'll start out by saying she's a total trooper and is basically unfazed by this all.
last friday was a district-wide "emergency evacuation drill". she's usually in after-care but the drill makes it mandatory for everyone to be bussed home (which is great because, in an emergency, if she gets home in 10 minutes there won't be anyone there to get her, but i digress). DH worked from home on friday to be there to get her. he gets to the bus stop and all the kids unload. no grace. the bus driver realizes she's not on there (remember, she's not usually on there in the PM) and starts calling around. they find her on another bus, she's ok. she gets dropped off a little later once the other bus finished the route.
we asked grace what went wrong and she said her teacher and an after-care teacher both told her to get on the wrong bus. she INSISTED she told them it was the wrong bus but they made her get on it anyway. she's 6 so i get how this could happen but WTF? if a kid says, "this is not my bus. that is not my bus driver" they should check.
so i went to school today to talk to someone about this. as i pulled up, so did 2 ambulances. not a good sign. i was immediately ushered into the after-care area (where they have before school care as well) and one of the teachers who put grace on the wrong bus was there. i talked to her about it and she told me that in addition to them checking 2 sets of paperwork, she had asked the bus driver who said "i know her". ? i suspect it was her driver from last year who is a total dipshit. we checked the paperwork and discovered that she's listed on the wrong bus.
eventually i get to see the principal who more or less completely brushed off my concerns about the fact that grace told them they were wrong but neither person listened to her. thanks lady. i'm more assured by the fact that the teacher i spoke to was a) mortified, and b) went out of her way to figure out what happened, as opposed to the prinicpal who spent the entire meeting telling me the reason they didn't listen to my daughter (who was right) is because kids can be wrong.
to top it off, she's had 2 nosebleeds in the past 24 hours. any more and i'm hightailing it to the doctor.
ETA: i'm giving the principal the benifit of the doubt because of the whole ambulance thing, but i'm still not impressed.
that blows! At least they corrected it. Hopefully they don't have to do that drill again any time soon?
once a year.
BUT i just got a phone call that they basically have to use the emergency evac procedure because the weather is so bad that all after-school activities are cancelled, so everyone goes home. i confirmed with the after-care director that she goes on the right bus. oy.

Is that kind of policy normal? It sounds completely bizarre to me. I would expect them to hunker down in the library, or evacuate to a shelter. Not to drop off kids to homes that may be empty.
