I have a Sequoia. While we use the space a lot, I'd really like something a little smaller. I have been looking at cars for awhile and the Q7 is at the top of my short list. I haven't actually test driven it but I like the body style and it looks pretty roomy on the outside. My neighbor has a Q5 and loves it but they seem to be an 'Audi family' so I wanted to get some other opinions.
Also, I'm just starting to do some research but there's a diesel version. I think it's more expensive but I think they're better to be better on gas but diesel is normally pricier than regular here. Any other benefits other than possible money savings?
I have a Q7, but not a diesel version. I love it. It's roomy, it drives really well, and I love all the extras. The double sunroof is amazing, the third and second row very easily fold down. We have have had 7 adults in the car easily the third row is also easy to get into. I was a little nervous about the size when we bought it but I have gotten used to it quickly and it's great. It is our first Audi but I am now officially obsessed. The gas mileage isn't great, I am sure the diesel would be great, but we didn't think we would recoup the extra cost of the diesel with the small amount of driving we do.

I get less than 15 now so I'm not all that worried about terrible mileage. It can't get worse. I have averaged 20k mile/year for the past two years but I think we'll only have this car 2-3 years so I'm not sure if it's worth the extra. Now if any local dealerships (which arent many within an hour) would get a 2013 for me to check out, I'd be in heaven. Did you order or buy off the lot? When DH's old cw was looking at one they said 6 mos to order which is insane.
I have an Audi and love it. I drove an A3 diesel for a week and really like it but you should know diesels drive differently. They're a "rougher" ride and louder too. It wouldn't stop me from buying one, but you should make sure you test drive the diesel.
We bought one that had been an executive corporate car, so it was a little over a year old so no waiting for it. Ours is a 2010. I do have a friend that had to order a 2012 Q5 last year and it took a few months to come in.
We are looking into buying a second audi and the A3 is on my list.

March mom - do you think it's louder? I guess they might have a different desk I could test drive bu there's no 2013s on the lot and the only used one they have is a 2009. I don't think I'm going o be able to test drive it unless I drive two ours.

I haven't driven the same car in a non-diesel version, but I would say maybe a tiny bit louder? If you hadn't asked, I wouldn't have thought of it. We have a BMW sedan as well, & the sound difference between the two is very minimal. Ours is a 2011. (I think?)

Thanks. I can't imagine it will bother me that much. DH has a Cayenne turbo and his last several cars have been loud so even if it's a little louder I don't think it'll be bad. I can't remember ever being in a diesel.

We didn't end up buying one, but we loved the Q5. It is probably a lot smaller than what you are used to. We ended up with the Volvo XC60 and it has a ton more trunk space than the Q5. Our biggest problem was the dealership. My husband had an Audi A4 which we replaced with a BMW 328 despite starting looking at Audis. The salesguy remembered we hadn't bought that car from him when we went in 4 years later to look at the Q5 and made a comment about it. Strike one. Then they wanted us to order a 2012 (this was May/June 2011) without knowing how much it was going to cost. Uhm, who does that? Strike two. Then we couldn't get anyone to call us back. Strike three. We gave up and got the Volvo. While it isn't as much fun to drive, we really needed the extra space and it's worth not having to deal with Audi. I heard their service department here went downhill too.
So, it's a great car, high in demand (which means they aren't budging on price), but make sure your dealership isn't run by a bunch of idiots.

Thanks. I def wouldn't be getting the Q5 - only considering the Q7 for space reasons. Luckily we already have some experience with this dealership (same one my husband bought his porsche at) so we know they're decent in that respect. I totally feel you on the shitty service though. That's what pushed us from buying another vehicle last time. The guy was a total douche which was just confirmed when he addressed the email to my husband (when I gave him what was clearly my email since it was my first name), sent a letter to only him and continued to email me several times after I told him that we had already purchased something.

Yeah, we have had douchey experiences at a lot of dealers. Audi here just seemed to be the worst. Not necessarily just on the sexist route, but also acting like used car salesmen and trying to not let my husband leave. That said, I would love to have an Audi again. I prefer german handling and the X3 was hideous. My husband was looking into diesels at one point and from what I remember, at least BMW made a good one. Most Europeans have the diesel versions due to high gas costs, so I would try to do the math to see if it's worth it here.
We have the Q7 and extra space is amazing. We are not using the third row at the moment so the trunk is ginormous - I have one of those free standing tall fans, a travel stroller and my uppa baby in the trunk and can still jam a few other things in there. We have an A6 as well which has SO much more pep but thats expected.
