This is a brag-plaint. I have some money that my employer gives every year for use in job related stuff. It's $1700 this year. It's used for things like work related travel, equipment, books, subscriptions, etc. And it's use it or lose it, so I must spend it all by Dec 31. Should I spend it on an educational conference that is out of town (driving distance) or should I buy an iPad and/or new computer?
I know...first world problems.
ETA: I am allowed to get a computer or phone (cell phone) or "email device". Yes, that means I can buy an iPhone or iPad or laptop or desktop or whatever. And can use it at work or home. Lots of my colleagues use the money for new phones or tablets or such that they use primarily at home.
I would get an iPad and a iPhone 5. Can you use the remainder to pay for a data plan? ETA- Nice cases for both are a must. Also, maybe a kindle for research purposes.

What is your occupation? I am asking because my answer depends on if it would be a good idea to use that money for a larger group benefit - ie, if you were a teacher, I would probably vote you spend the money on classroom supplies, etc. Or is it strictly for personal use anyhow?
I'm a doctor. And I actually can't use the money for donations or things. So as much as I would love to get books to hand out to kids, that's not allowed. DH wants me to get an iPad, but even a fancy version would still leave me with $1000...
