Lurker here...it’s been in the 80’s up here in Alaska. I got sunburnt at our parade today even with serious sunscreen on and only being outside for 2 hours.
God, I am such a wimp. Our AC went out on Sunday, and our house was 81 degrees until we got it replaced yesterday. I was turning into an insufferable person LOL.

I’m in Chicago and complain all damn winter (that lasted well into April this year) about how I want summer so we can get outside but it’s been even too hot to be outside. So now I’m complaining about it being so hot. Spring and fall always seem so short and they are my favorite here.
Thankfully we bought a house a year ago that has a good AC that keeps up. Our last house struggled.

Our neighbor did not put her AC in right away when the heat wave started (up in VT) and her home (which was shut up with shades drawn to attempt to keep it cool) was 94 degrees. INSIDE.
Even with our giant AC cranking for many many hours, the main living spaces only get DOWN to 78.
It has been in the high nineties every day since Saturday last week, humidity wavers between 75-90%, real feel has been above 100 for over 6 days now. I will happily take New England winters to not have weather like this all summer.

I'm so tired of this heat. And I have a right to complain because I make it obvious to everyone I talk to that I much prefer winter and being cold than this nonsense, so I am not being hypocritical. But it would have been nice to have a longer legit spring.
Our central a/c is ancient and when we had higher temps for a few days in May, it conveniently stopped working. A/c technician started it up again but said to seriously consider buying a new one after this summer is over unless we want him coming every summer (possibly multiple times) to fix it. He estimates it's over 20 years old, which sounds right because we are the second owners of this house (built in 1992, we bought in late 2014) and the previous owner did pretty much no maintenance whatsoever. It had a tough time working in the hottest temps last weekend, so we just hope it survives through August and that way maybe we can pick up a new a/c in the fall when there are sales and less demand for installation.
We also live in a 3BR rowhouse with all bedrooms on the second floor, so there's an interior bedroom with just a skylight. We bought great blackout shades for it since there's also only one vent in there for the a/c, but suddenly they're not closing all the way and even a sliver of sunlight as the sun is beating straight down was enough to raise the temps in that room to 85 by the afternoon. They're under a lifetime warranty but we have to remove them and bring them back to the store in order to get a replacement, which could take about a week. I don't want to have paid for a product that isn't working as expected so I want to take the shade down right away and bring it in, but then that room is going to feel even worse during that week or so. But waiting until fall or something sucks too. In the meantime, we're keeping it classy by stuffing a t-shirt within the sliver, which is actually doing a decent job (but looks terrible). I think we'll just take it down tomorrow night and bring to the store on Saturday morning since Saturday temperatures are supposed to be pretty nice and then have the kids share a room temporarily for that week or so before the new shade gets installed.

Are there really sales for this kind of thing?
We're in almost the same boat--we have two central air units and the one for upstairs is barely chugging along. We were told we have to replace both units at the same time but to run it to the ground until it absolutely dies. No other companies will even return our calls for estimates because they're so busy. We're trying to hang on until fall or next spring, but it would be even better if there was a financial benefit to waiting.
Ugh, this legitimately has me scared for the future. I don't ever remember having heat waves lasting a week or longer. I grew up without AC and I remember a few hot nights every summer, maybe a week or 2 that sucked in August. But this is insane and it is only July and shows no signs of regulating. Plus when you look at how hot is everywhere, I can't help but be scared that this is the new norm due to climate change. The extremes are getting worse, the winter was extra long this year and now the summer is crazy hot. I feel bad because I'm definitely one who complains all winter that I can't wait until it is summer so we can enjoy the outside, but as dancingirl21, PP said, it is really too hot to be outside most of the day. We went to fireworks last night at 9 PM and it was still crazy hot and humid. I feel like this is the new normal and it terrifies me for DD.

Yes unless everyone is lying to me, which is definitely possible...
Well, I live in Houston so I am used to disgusting summers.
However, it started so early this year!! We had an amazing March and April and then by May we were hitting 100 degrees. We had one of our hottest Junes on record. July so far seems a bit more normal (if not a little cooler) with highs in the lower 90's instead 98 and 99 like it was last month.
I'd say I'm ready for fall but I can't let myself get down by the heat yet. It's only July. It doesn't cool down here until October at the very earliest.

It's not super attractive, but you can get a foil backed foam board, cut it to size and it's pretty effective at keeping out the heat. It should get you through until the new blinds are installed.
Our local news posted this morning that we've had 18 days pre-July 4th that were at 90 or above. Average for our area is 5 of those.
I'm not sure what our average is for after July 4th, but typically July/August are the worst months for heat here, if my few years in the area are any indication.
Part of me is glad I'm not the only one dealing with crazy heat and humidity...and the rest of me is dreading the remainder of the summer if it's been this hot already.
It's supposed to cool off a bit here this weekend (high 70's/low 80's with less humidity) and I'm so excited I don't know what to do with myself. Hope my husband is ready for a whole lot of yard work on Saturday!
Still really fucking hot in Rhode Island with no sign of letting up.
It's sooooo bad here. Thank god I have central air.
What the heck kind of sorcery is this!? No one has central air! I’m sooooo jealous. We don’t even have a window unit in yet because it’s too heavy to carry up from the basement.
our heat wave is just starting. It's supposed to be 104 tomorrow.
We have no AC. This is gunna be fun.
Oh no. 😞 We have central air but try not to run it too much (last summer we were hit with a $600 bill). We're using one of these in the living room and it works surprisingly well, especially if you add ice in with the water.

Yeah, we've got fans and the pool. For the most part the house stays cool-er during the hot times. My guess is that it'll stay in the 80's inside. So AC is not usually a necessity. It's been a want since we moved in, though. I might just take the dog and cat and go to my MIL's house if gets too hot inside. She has AC.

Previous owner installed it!! A bunch of houses on my street have gotten those ductless ones in the last two years.

My in-laws got the ductless units in their family room/kitchen and master bedroom. We were there for Memorial Day last year and it was super hot. I had forgotten they had those - the inside of their house felt really nice!
Even though I'm in Philly, we only have window units, but living without AC for the last week, I'm really thankful for those!
London is in the mid-sized to upper-80s right now and for the last two weeks. It's meant to continue next week. Almost no one has air conditioning at their homes. We've been on holiday which has been great for us but I'm going to struggle in my officer next week, which is an old Victorian building with no air and barely any good cross wind when doors and windows are open...which can't happen during counselling sessions. Ugh. How I don't have any hot flashes this week. Wonder how to dress for my sweaty self.

We had a cold front come in last night (Chicago) and the high is only 80 today. It’s about 75 here right now. The kids and I were outside playing (finally!) and the wind feels almost cool. It’s so nice! Sweet relief. Hoping you all get this soon.

It's supposed to roll through here tonight and tomorrow will be gloriously low humidity.
Africa may have witnessed its all-time hottest temperature Thursday: 124 degrees in Algeria
The planet’s hottest continent probably just endured its hottest weather ever reliably measured.
An Algerian city soared to 124.3 degrees (51.3 Celsius) Thursday, adding to the onslaught of records for extreme heat set around the planet during the past 10 days.
The blistering-hot temperature reading, observed in Ouargla, is probably the highest temperature ever reliably measured both in Algeria and in all of Africa. The record was first identified by weather records expert Maximiliano Herrera.
