I am somewhat surprised things like this don't happen more often in the age of social media and people trying to outdo each other for the best photo/video.
A doctor friend told me there was an article in a medical journal a year or two ago about an uptick in deaths at national parks due to people getting reckless with the selfie taking.
I...am having a similar reaction to poachers eaten by lions but feel slightly guilty about it.
"The group made headlines in 2016 after Mr Gamble, Mr Lykah and another member were handed five-year bans from US federal lands after an out-of-bounds excursion on a sensitive hot spring in Yellowstone National Park.
In one of his most recent Instagram posts, 30-year-old Mr Gamble wrote: "Life isn't about responsibilities, tough decisions and hard work, it's about feeling bliss and living in the moment.""
Mmmmhmmmm. Not like I think they deserved to die, but I'm side-eyeing this part of the article pretty hard.

I'm guessing these are the kind of schmucks that trespass on the support beams under a bridge near me. 700+ foot fall? Eh, it could never happen to me!
Morons. I feel no sympathy for them, but I do hope their friends and family can find some sort of peace.

Yeah, this is a better statement. I do feel badly for their loved ones.
Based on a CBC article I read, eyewitnesses say a girl slipped and fell in and the guys jumped to try and save her.
I read an article in the Atlantic a couple of months ago reviewing the death toll on some peaks in Colorado and how it directly coordinates with increased social media postings about the parks. Unskilled mountain climbers are attempting dangerous climbs based on the fact that their friends did it or they saw it posted on Instagram. The park was attempting to do a social media campaign to dissuade climbers from attempting some areas, no matter how picturesque.
As someone who has a loved one that is a first responder and has gone into harms way to save other people from their foolishness, I'm having trouble mustering sympathy. I hope word spreads and it discourages others from doing reckless things.
Yeah, bye guys. The list of infractions of ignoring signs and treading on landmarks and protected lands is long. there was also a post that one of the people who took photos of them climbing the holocaust memorial was part of this group - though, I couldn't find anything to confirm that. planetjh.com/2016/05/18/leave-no-trace-of-common-sense/

Yeah, it wasn’t just A Girl though. It was the girl they were with. They were in an unsafe area.
They didn’t die trying to be Good Samaritans. They died being foolish.
I couldn’t tell by your sentence if you knew the girl was with them or not.

The go fund me is for a party...maybe it should go to the rescuers. I don't feel bad that I don't feel bad. "Our gift to them is to use the money raised to cover the costs of the Celebration of Life that will commemorate all three of these beautiful lives."

A "Celebration of Life" is a memorial, like a funeral service. Folks who are not regular church goers in Canada use this to describe the "service" or gathering or memorial, or whatever you want to call it that brings together friends and family to remember the person/people who have passed on.
I have relatives that had a "Celebration of Life". It's not really a party.

Maybe this will make other young adventurer blogger types think twice about taking similar risks. But probably not. Young people often tend to think they are invincible.
I do feel bad for their families and loved ones. Has to be hard to lose someone so young and in a way that was completely preventable.
It doesn't sound like they were doing anything reckless at the time. The were on an established, popular hiking trail. One article said they went into the pool to swim, and another said she slipped from the trail. Regardless, no article has said they were off trail, in a restricted area, unprepared, or otherwise acting recklessly. This sounds like an tragic accident, which unfortunately happens all the time.
Also - the girlfriend wasn't even part of the reckless adventure asshole group. But karma's a bitch anyway, I guess.

Instagram model sees pictures of people swimming with sharks. Is surprised when nature prevails and she almost gets her hand bitten off by one.
The only damn way I’m getting into water with sharks is if I’m surrounded by a steel cage.
I wouldn't intentionally swim with that many, but I've seen nurse sharks on snorkels/ dives. They're not generally threatening to humans. They're also usually solitary, but they sleep in large piles which means they were probably asleep, and she disturbed them.

You're a braver woman than I!
I'm more scared of all the stinging things I'm also more scared crossing the road where I live or all the drunk drivers. I met some police at a bar pounding beers and driving off. Oy vey! And definitely no one even pauses for a red light at a rare crosswalk.
We take risks where we have to and mitigate what we can, especially to do something enjoyable.

I admit I backpedaled (well, back-flippered?) as fast as possible in Australia when a nurse shark came out from a coral hole right toward me and DH. But, I do agree with sushi that most sharks don't intentionally bother humans, and this one veered off before getting too close. After all, on land I hike/run/etc. in terrain frequented by mountain lions and bears; is swimming in the ocean, knowing sharks also live there, much different?

There has never been a death caused by a nurse shark. They don't even have the normal shark-y teeth. This one was likely either curious or she bumped her arm into it/disturbed it.
In crazy picture stories, someone I know just got back from Yellowstone. They were driving and a bear was sitting right by the side of the road. They pulled up close and she is taking a picture when her husband from the drivers side rolls down the window so she’s like arms length from the bear going “roll up the window” between clenched teeth.
His excuse was he wanted her to have a better picture (doh!!)
