-we are going to be in the area before our cruise in October for 2 nights. We dont think we want to stay onsite at Disney (although we might). We think we just want to hang out at the hotel with our toddlers (will be 22 months). So a hotel with lots to do: splashpad, pool, etc.

Assuming the port the cruise is leaving from is someplace further away like Port Canaveral and you aren't planning on doing any Disney activities in Orlando, I would suggest you find a hotel closer to the port. However, Disney Cruise Line, if that is who you are using, supposedly gives a good deal on the Hyatt at he airport. I don't know anything about amenities there.
The Wyndham Bonnet Creek is our fav, they are 1-3 bedroom condos with full kitchen, washer/dryer etc. And the resort has like 7 swimming pools, there is a shallow one for kids with play stuff, though I'm not sure it's got a splash pad. We usually get a good deal through VRBO.
