I had a small dinner party and I served goat's butter. Upon helping to clean the kitchen, my cousin's wife was shocked that I did not let people know I was serving from goat vs cow. Would eating one versus the other upset you?
“With sorrow—for this Court, but more, for the many millions of American women who have today lost a fundamental constitutional protection—we dissent,”
I would have assumed it was, but had if I found out later it wasn't, I wouldn't really care. The one exception would be if it was made from something people (not just me) usually don't eat - like butter from breast milk (is that possible?).
No, not at all. If it is something that can be readily picked up from any grocery store and isn't a known common allergen, I wouldn't expect to be told.
The only reason why I would be shocked and appalled, I guess, is if there was some kind of allergy associated with goat's milk that wasn't present with cow's milk.
"Why would you ruin perfectly good peanuts by adding candy corn? That's like saying hey, I have these awesome nachos, guess I better add some dryer lint." - Nonny
I assume that butter was from cow milk. People can be really weird about what they eat. While goat milk allergy is probably rare but I think it is best to just tell people if you're serving something unusual. I had a big party with a lot of specialized diets and I just labeled everything.
Yes, I would assume that it was from a cow. No, I wouldn't be upset that it wasn't. My brother however would be shocked and appalled and vow to never eat at your house again LOL
I’d assume it was cow butter but I’d be fine with goat. Goat butter is pretty unusual and generally more expensive so I don’t think that the butter would be goat would cross anyone’s mind.
If I had a goat milk allergy, I’d probably ask before eating dairy anyway.
I would assume it was from a cow. I wouldn’t be upset that it was goats butter. But I’d probably warn people if I were serving it just in case of allergies or something.

This. The other concern I would guess would be religious reasons ... but that tends to come up more with meat. Like if you were swapping out beef for pork or vice versa it might make a difference to some people.
FTR I've never had butter made from goats milk before, but I just tried Goat's Milk Cheddar last weekend and it was amazing! I can't tolerate cow dairy and was so excited that I can now get different varieties of goat's milk cheese locally. I'm no longer limited to feta and soft cheeses, my local healthfood store now carries Muenster, Cheddar, and I think that there was one more variety. Now if I can just find goat's milk brie......

Thanks all! I assumed an allergy or religious issue would only apply in the opposite direction, so I never thought to bring it up. Glad to know I wasn't terribly off base!

I love goat milk's brie! I see This one everywhere now. It's expensive though. $9.99 in my area.

I can't have cow's milk either. There are so ma y great goat and sheep's milk cheeses available that I don't care about cow's milk cheeses anymore.
Both Trader Joe's and Whole foods have goat milk brie. Sometimes Aldi's has goats milk cheddar and I think brie in December but they didn't this past year. When they do we stock up on the cheddar...so good.
Costco has chevre, feta, Manchego, Rosey Goat and sometimes goat's milk gouda.
If you haven't tried it yet, La Loo goat's milk ice cream is amazing. The goat's milk hater relatives are converts.
Oh, and obviously I wouldn't care about goat's milk butter.

Huhm. The closest Whole Foods and Trader Joe's to me are 35-40 minutes away, but I may have to make a trip. Thank you!

Thank you! I might actually send this picture to my local health food store and recommend that they start carrying it.

I've had some weird food reactions so when I'm not at home, I stick to foods I know I'm good with. So yea, I'd be annoyed. Assuming I didn't have a reaction it wouldn't be a big deal. But I would definitely rather know.
I am fairly certain if you're allergic to cow's milk, you're allergic to goat's milk. Or, at least that's what I was told by my son's allergist when he was dx with a dairy allergy. So, I would assume the opposite is true as well, so if someone could have cow's butter, I'd assume they could have goat's butter. NOT saying that's right, just that's what I would initially think (and why if it were me, I wouldn't have notified people beforehand either).
Plus, when I serve people at my house, I usually know them well enough to know if they have any food intolerances or allergies.
