I am trying to figure out what happen. Did they drown inside of the boat thing? Like had no chance to escape? 17 is so many people.
I also want to know how long it takes to travel back to the shore. I think they said a T storm warning was issued 40 minutes before the incident. Does it take that long to journey back or did they not pay attention to the warning?
These are the storms that whipped through Iowa yesterday causing terrible tornados. They came on everyone quick.
There was a video of it and the whole boat just went down. I don't think any amount of life preserves would have saved them. If anything, the captain should have started to evacuate people but it happened so fast. It is horrible.
I finally watched it and had to stop. Those poor people. I can not imagine.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
I just talked to a friend who was at the lake yesterday. She said they had been on the water when they saw the radar and decided to get off. She said it came up so fast and if people weren't paying attention to radar, she could see how they would be caught off guard. However, I would assume the duck company would have known better.

This is so horrible. I too had wondered why they didn't put their life vests on, but being trapped inside makes total sense. I've been on these 3 times, twice in Branson and I remember them telling us where the life vests where, but I can't remember if they were easy to get to, and I can see it being really hard to get out if the boat is sinking. No way can I watch the video.
Owner says doomed duck boat shouldn't have been in water. “I don’t have all the details, but to answer your question, no, it shouldn’t have been in the water if, if what happened, happened,” Jim Pattison Jr., the president of Ripley Entertainment, said on CBS News Friday morning.
How horrific. We were going to do this in Boston next week but I think we’ll skip.
You can get off the boat before it gets in the water if you want to ride it but skip the water part. Its a fun way to see a bunch of the city.
I've been out on choppy water in small boats in storms and it is not good. I feel so bad for all the people who lost their lives and their families. So awful

One of the folks in my insurance group calls these floating coffins for a reason. Even if everyone was wearing their life jackets prior to entering the water, the water conditions would have made surfacing a nightmare.
When I was a kid my parents used to tell me these things were a death trap. I think it’s a mixture of so many things that makes these ducks so deadly when they go down. They attract families including very young children and older adults who may not be very good swimmers. Life jackets aren’t within arm’s reach. They have a roof and small windows preventing most people from escaping, even if you did have your life jacket on. What are the fatalities? 13/20 in the 1999 incident and 17/31 in this one? It’s astounding. Something has to change with these things.
Why do they even have roofs? I guess so you can go on tours in the rain?
After the Arkansas accident in 1999, the NTSB report basically said that having roofs on these things (which don't have any kind of reserve flotation, so if they take on water, they're going down) makes them an unacceptable risk to passenger safety. Because they go down so quickly, trapping any passengers at the roof so they can't escape. It's horrifying. We rode one in Boston years ago but never again - certainly not with kids.
I don’t understand why they don’t make people wear life jackets on these. Isn’t that generally a law on boats? I’ve only been on boats in the ocean.
No. I've never heard of this and I grew up on the ocean. I even have family that has a marina and family that runs a ferry business. You have to have vests in board but you don't wear them unless in an emergency.
I'll admit I'm a bit salty that the tourist boat that went down in thailand and 50+ people died (mostly Chinese tourists) last month garnered not a single post. It's not that I think people don't care but it's a reflection of America first! media.
Also wrt to kids and vests that's a very local ordinance. I've been boarded by coast guard many times, and the check is a count of vests (you have to have kid size if you have kids), flares, extinguisher (depending on boat size/ type). Horns. Proper flags to signal things like quarantine or help. Probably a few other items I've forgotten.
I've been on a boat twice in my life. I wouldn't have known these boats have a history of this happening, or whether or not I was supposed to have a life jacket. I would have trusted the company to be operating safe vehicles, etc.
I just found out my friend's best friend and 8 of her family members died in this. One of the two survivors in her family said when the family reached for the life jackets, the captain (?) told them it was unnecessary.

I do not think it is odd for American news stations to focus more on American news. Doesn't every country follow local stories more than international ones?

Oh god, I'm so sorry for your friend's loss and that poor family.

Did you read the thread and see how many of us have ridden these exact boats in the past, including me with my then-3–year-old? It’s essentially a local story for a handful of us as well.
This is so terrible. I cannot imagine the terror, and those poor two survivors who lost everyone.
My son's Vacation Bible School closing service was tonight, with a theme of Shipwrecked, and was all about how Jesus rescues you when you're shipwrecked. The theme was set months in advance so it's not their fault, but....yikes. Definitely felt very wrong in light of this tragedy. (PDQ, I don't want church people finding me...I will likely edit).
krystee that is the theme at many VBS programs this year. The same 2-3 curriculums get used at most churches! I’ve seen signs at churches all over town.
