There is a smaller fire 10 miles from my house and it is absolutely exhausting to be in a constant state of semi-terror when you hear a fire truck or see one of the tanker planes. And coming from a place of privilege (as in, I still have a home) I know how absolutely entitled and whiny that sounds. This has to be what living in a war-torn country is like. You know you're safe at present but that could change literally in the next 5 minutes when some toolbag decides today's the day to throw a lit joint out the window (happened last year).
I love it here and wouldn't ever leave, but FOR REAL, the constant state of fear-arousal is too much right now. People are seriously on edge. It is HOT and the air quality is terrible and it looks entirely overcast and everyone is super anxious and as a result, tempers are super short. I just want to run away and come back after rainy season starts.

DH & his crew have been in and out a lot lately and the FT guys are just exhausted. His city prefers to keep their aux guys (city employees who work for another department AND with fire) close by in case something happens within city borders so he hasn't gone up north but he's gone back and forth for some of the more local fires. This weekend they're on full red flag/report back ASAP due to the weather.
Stay safe, mrs.jacinthe! Your description is so spot on for how I think we’re all feeling here. My sister’s home was threatened by the River fire, and I would wake up on edge, scouring the Internet for more news. It’s awful to be near, and has its own hard parts to be remote.
Love of my life baby boy born 11/11. One and done not by choice; 3 years of TTC yielded 4 MMC and 2 CPs, through 4 IUIs and 2 IVFs. Focusing on making the world a better place instead...and running.
I'm up on Tahoe right now and the smoke today was awful. You couldn't see the other side of the lake and the smoke choked you. Sending good thoughts to all those affected.
