A friend shared this on FB. Her friend was the NatGeo photographer for the story. As someone who is a huge fan of much of what CCF and Cleveland University Hospitals has accomplished, this story amazes me. It was years in the making. At 18, Katie Stubblefield lost her face when she attempted suicide using a family's shotgun. At 21, she got a new face when a young woman died of a drug overdose.
My heart aches for the donor, and for the recipient ... stunning just how much one's life can change because of just a split-second event.
I read something a while back saying that 3D technology is being used for face donors - their faces are scanned before the donation, so that if the family wants to hold a wake or something, they will have a realistic face again.
