The system failed not only the 13 year old, but his mom who was raped by a 25 year old and gave birth to him when she was 12. This kid never stood a chance.
What are your thoughts? Honestly, I feel like he's so far "gone" - neglected by the system, family, etc that it would be tough to rehabilitate him enough to be safe for society if released as an adult if he were tried as a child.
He might - might - have a shot at becoming a normal, nonviolent person if there were millions of dollars of therapy and rehabilitation directed at him. But, we don't have that kind of program, nor the money available for that program, so in the current system, there is very little, if any, chance of him *not* committing more violent crimes if he is released. I don't see how the judge really has much choice here if she wants to protect the public.
All things considered, maybe the adult system is the best all around.
Sad to say, but juvie isn't exactly day care so it's not as if he won't learn just as much jacked shit as he would in the adult population. And besides all that, he's already committed some of the most awful crimes anyway. He'll be segregated in the adult prison if convicted and he won't just be magically released at 21 with little supervision if any.
It sucks that he's in this position, it really does. But it was sucking for him long before this.
