We just hired our first house keeper and I'm wondering if I need to tip her each week when she comes. It will always be the same person. She'll be coming for 2-3 hours each week. Her pay is going to be $20 an hour, so if I am supposed to give a tip each week, how much should it be? Or do I stick with a bonus on the holidays?
This is what we used to do with our housekeeper who was with us for 6 years. I also used to give her a gift card on her birthday and buy her children small birthday presents.
Does she work for a service or for herself? If she's working for a service, definitely tip. If she doesn't, up to you. Ours works for herself and she charges $85 per visit (way lower than the going rate) and so we give her $100 a visit, and then at the holidays we give her an extra $100.
wait. why would you tip someone you are already paying? this makes no sense.
In our case, yuppie guilt, because we never have $85 even in cash anyway, and because she does a great job and I think that the amount we pay with tip is fair?
Our prior housekeeper was through a service, and those hired through services make relatively little of the hourly rate, so tips make a big difference in their meager pay for kind of awful work.
