I don't like heavy coverage look but I need more coverage if I'm using makeup. The best thing you can do is SPOT CONCEAL. Apply a medium coverage foundation and apply concealer on the areas you need. My spot concealing is actually the bottom half of my face but still an extra layer of concealer in just those areas looks so much more natural than just going full coverage everywhere!
I found that as I've aged it's actually better to find a foundation with LESS coverage as more coverage ages me, so I'd keep that in mind.
I agree that as I've gotten older foundations with less coverage work better. When I was in my 20s and 30s I used pretty full coverage foundations, but now I find that they really age me.
Like the OP, I found that I needed to go the opposite route from what you're both saying. I went from using tinted moisturizer for years, to BB cream, to regular foundation. A *good* full coverage foundation won't age you, but it's important to find one that's good quality and that works well with your skin.
Also, I don't apply it hairline to jawline. I just apply it on my undereye area, cheeks, nose, and upper lip. That's where my inconsistencies are, and using it only there gives the most natural look. That means I have to find an *exact* color match, which can be hard, and sometimes I've had to mix two shades to get it exactly right. But it's worth it for the natural look and feel.

I’m 38 and I’ve tried maybe all of the foundations at Sephora - my two favorites are Lancôme teint idole and Guerlain lingerie de peau. I’d recommend going into Sephora and asking for some samples of ones you’re interested in.
