There is a way to separate for instances like this. :-) You’re good. Except I plan on winning so I’ll let you know how long the separation paperwork takes. 😂😂😂
I said today I’d buy the Guard, stay in, and fire some people.
I remember once in a group setting, someone was asking a similar question, more in the form of "what would you do if you won"
The obvious responses, including some very well laid out ideas, came out. Then a friend of ours said "I would fly all of my friends and family over, first class, then throw an epic weekend party, all out. Because after that, those friends will be gone (not that they'll leave, but that you'll have to leave them, because you're in a different SES and/or they'll become a nuisance because of asking you or the potential/perception of their asks) and you'll have to distance yourself from the majority of your family because of the same.
My initial thought was "wow, that's really shallow" but the more I thought about it, the more I realized there's some truth to that, if only because isolation from everyone that might just want to abuse you is imminent. Security alone, even in the most incognito of circumstances, would be a challenge
So... that's all I got.
I sure wouldn't mind a smaller fraction of that though. I mean, thedutchgirl and I already have our home picked out

Heck yes I want to win. Like others said, I’d set up a trust so my name isn’t out there, though I’m worried I’d do something dumb like post a picture of my dog hanging out next to the pool behind our ocean view estate with my Tesla and receipt for our yacht in the background and everyone would figure it out.

Yes, but unfortunately, California doesn't allow winners to claim anonymously or through a trust or LLC, so prior to claiming, I'd have to do quite a bit of work on obscuring my life (because of my career, I'm most of the first page on google if you search my name). So I'd most likely use most, if not all, of the allowable time prior to claiming in order to get things in order. Lawyer, financial adviser, security adviser, etc.
I think my close family and friends would be cool with it, but I'm guessing I'd have to isolate from my more distant friends and family members quite a bit, which would be unfortunate.
Sure. I have a small family and barely any friends lol
My let’s do something crazy would be buying out whole theaters for my favorite performances so I wouldn’t have to listen to people cough or rustle plastic bags behind me like they did all throughout Mozart’s Requiem.
So I'd most likely use most, if not all, of the allowable time prior to claiming in order to get things in order. Lawyer, financial adviser, security adviser, etc.
Thrse are things I know I need, but WHO? Which firms do good with lay people who come into that much money without screwing them over? If I can barely open a regular person retirement account and feel confident, how do I pick a lawyer, financial advisor, trust manager, security team...
Yes I would want to win it, but apparently not enough to actually buy a lottery ticket. If I were to come into this amount of money I would probably post here under a lame AE asking what to do b/c I wouldn't know how/ where to get started with a lawyer or trust or whatever else I need.
For a multi state lottery like that, could you move and become a resident of a state that doesn't require disclosure and THEN claim the ticket?
But like, what would you tell everyone? If I randomly picked up and moved to a random state for no apparent reason and didn't get a job, bought a nicer house, suddenly traveled more, etc...how am I supposed to hide that from everyone I know?
I feel like they would figure out something was up, unless I manufactured an entire public life that I wasn't actually living, which would be weird. Even if I used 100% for philanthropy, am I supposed to never mention it to anyone? I don't really want a ton of money if it essentially means going into a witness protection program.

All of you talking about claiming it anonymously...ya realize that as of this morning it was a $900 million lump sum and by Tuesday it will be closer to a billion? Ya really think you’re gonna remain anonymous?
I mean, at over a billion dollars, you don't have to worry about your relationships with your family and friends being changed.
Because you can give them all a few million and not even cause a dent in your money so you can all live a life of luxury.
This is high on my thoughts list when I think about winning a ton of money - how many friends would get $ from me and how much? My good friends would get at least a few hundred grand each (I've thought 100k-250k, and/or $50k for each child's college fund)
Sure. I mean I guess it’s an alarming amount but I have a big family. It’s nice to think nobody I care about would ever have to worry about money again.
Plus so many charities and such. I think we’d do a decent job of managing it. 😀
I think 10 million would be a nice tidy sum, enough to live on and quit work
I don’t even mind working and I like my job. It’s just too much of life hours spent at work really. I only want to work 2 or 3 days but still get paid the full amount 😀
So I'd most likely use most, if not all, of the allowable time prior to claiming in order to get things in order. Lawyer, financial adviser, security adviser, etc.

I’d need lawyers to keep an eye on my lawyers.
I’d work with people that I already know or had a relationship with like my current accountant and farmvillelover. But yeah, it would be stressful trying to get the team together. Last time I bought a ticket, I worked myself up so much that I was a little relieved that I didn’t win. Lol

Ha! And I've have a short list of professionals that would be able to grow that money lol!

Of course!
I live in a pretty small town and think of the difference it could make. I'd fund two big community projects that my town has been trying to do forever -- one being a recreation center. I'd give a ton of money to all of the schools, hospital and local not-for-profits. There would never be a family to go hungry or go without a place to live again. I would build a ton of nice, affordable housing.
Then I would dole out some to family & friends - say a million each.
I would probably build a country subdivision for our friends and family to live in close proximity with security all around the compound. But I would still want a fairly normal life with school, friends and activities for my kids. We would travel every second we get on school breaks and of course their college would be fully funded. I just don't want to raise rich assholes.
We would drive cool cars and I would finally find a bra that fits. I would also hire a chef and laundry do-er. I'd probably take about $10 million to live on for the rest of my life and then I would probably start a philanthropic foundation where my family would serve on the board and decide the best use of the money going forward.
All you people saying you don't want the money are also people who pass when offered dessert, or switch seats with a stranger and end up in the middle seat on a plane, or claim to never be annoyed by their children, aren't you?

You're overestimating the amount of friends and family I see in person regularly.
Also, acquiring property and "moving" on paper doesn't have to be a physical move. BF would gladly house me here so I could have my name on documents elsewhere. All moot if you have to claim in the state of purchase.
ETA I'd actually still stay in my current town. However, if I won tonight, at first I'd say the increase in lifestyle comes from getting married and BF's salary. But that would only get me so far.

Farmville, I have a question. How did you arrive at your hypothetical dollar amounts to give to your friends? With, say, a billion dollars, couldn't you just throw (insert random # here) million at them all for whatever purpose suited them? I'm genuinely curious, not trying to be snarky in any way. (Keep in mind I started this thread, so I really wonder about the issue from all aspects and perspectives.)
