I found out like 3 weeks ago that my best friend (who lives in Europe) is pregnant. She told me last week that she is now also engaged, and getting married in city hall (well, whatever they call it there) in October, with only parents present. There will be some sort of celebration in the states after the baby is born
This is her second wedding -- the first was a big destination wedding in Italy, with a destination bachelorette party in Las Vegas, with full registries and showers and all of that. This one is obviously much more low key and will have none of those things. Including registry, which makes gift giving harder.
Any suggestions for gifts where there is no registry involved but it is your best friend but it is very low-key? Also, when would you give the gift? Around the time of the wedding itself, or when they have their celebration here?
With it being your best friend I would send the gift around the time of the wedding. Could you get a nice engraved piece of glass for them, maybe stemware or something similar to commemorate the day for them.
Can you send them a gift certificate to a great restaurant in their area?
I've found that trying to buy gift certificates internationally can be a nightmare because very few places want to take American credit cards with American addresses behind them because of fraud concerns etc.
