Celebrate can be whatever you want it to mean. Costumes, actually talking like a pirate, just simple recognition that there's a day for talking like a pirate, etc.
It's a big deal around here (although I've never actually heard anybody talk like a pirate), but it was started buy a guy who lives about an hour north of me. Is it a big deal nationally?
Not really? No FB posts and I never remember the date. I'm getting to the point where I find out about weird stuff like this and that Gangnam Style video through Good Morning America.
Happy Birthday ladies! My co-workers are celebrating because they are 12. It's not very pleasant trying to be on a conference call and I know everyone can hear them in the background. They put ARGH on the end of everything.
I saw it on FB. Conveniently, I'm still wearing an eye patch. Aren't there places that will give you free food for that? Maybe H and I will go out to dinner, and I won't be a freak show!
Someone mentioned it on my FB but I've never seen anyone "celebrate."
We do tease our one friend about it, because years ago we went to a street fair and he drank way too much sangria and then went around telling people he was a pirate.
I used to be in charge of employee engagement at an employer (basically come up with sort of fun, as close to FREE as possible shit for the employees to be involved in that won't detract from getting work done).
I celebrated Talk Like A Pirate day every year, did a little prize for the best pirate joke, bought Pirate's Booty for the break room and gold chocolate coins, did some cut out paper eye patches and mustaches that people could wear. As a result, I had a reputation for being the girl who loved pirates. My going away cake had a pirate on it.
I have an oddly large collection of stupid pirate jokes from the years of celebrating. My favorite is as follows:
A pirate with a hook walked in to a bar. Bartender says, "What's the hook for?" Pirate replies, "Argh, my hand was blown to bits. They replaced it with this hook."
Later, a pirate with an eyepatch walks in. Bartender asks, "What's the eyepatch for?" Pirate replies, "Argh, I lost me eye and they covered it with this patch.
Still later, a pirate walks in with a steering wheel on his belt. Bartender shakes his head and asks, "Ok, what's the steering wheel for?" Pirate replies, "Argh, it's drivin' me nuts!"
I know our local library has a pirate story day for kids because my SIL was asking me what she could do with what she has to dress my niece like a pirate for it. Did not make the connection to talk like a pirate day until I saw woot.com yesterday all pirate looking.

I changed my facebook language to Pirate for the day. Always makes me giggle. I might have some rum later this evening to celebrate. I think there's a bar-crawl for it but I'm not entirely sure.
It's my birthday too! (I've been trying to post more). Talk like a pirate isn't as big of a deal here (PA) as where I grew up (MI). In high school, they always sang Happy birthday in pirate.

Holy crap! Love it! We do have the 13th most common birthday.

Didn't we discuss this on the old MM and someone thought it was insensitive to the people that were being held hostage by Somali pirates? Was that jimbooo?

Lol. Yes, in the context of pirate-themed birthday parties, I believe.
