Debra Messing asked WalMart why they're supporting someone who wants to attend a lynching, and this is WM's response:
Replying to @debramessing @slpng_giants
Hi Debra. Completely understand your concern. Sen. Hyde-Smith’s recent comments clearly do not reflect the values of our company and associates. As a result, we are withdrawing our support and requesting a refund of all campaign donations.
We are truly living in the upside down when Wal-Mart is more principled than the GOP.

I have no clue regarding the laws surrounding donations. It seems like once it's given, the recipient is under no obligation to return the money. Hopefully I am wrong. Sending out a tweet and following through are two different things though. If the company follows through, that's pretty amazing.

There were several instances in IL this year where candidates took money from people who shouldn't have been giving it (for a variety of reasons) and they all returned it, as well.
I have to wonder if they knew before the donations were made, since the donations were given after the comments, and they're requesting the refund (or at least publicly claiming to) only because a celebrity put them on the spot. Hyde-Smith has been racist for a while, after all.

I think it’s somewhat obvious they knew. On the other hand, I guess pulling the donations back is better than not pulling them back? Smallest victories. Walmart has always had a pretty trash record with political donations so this surprises me not at all.

As proven multiple times. Wal-Mart is no pillar of corporate responsibility but hey, if they know they're under a constant microscope and thereby are forced to be better, I'm ok with that.
EllieArroway said in another thread that it's a ProBoards issue. It's something she's been able to turn off before, but that option isn't there anymore.

Ohhhhhh....
Proboards is working with Viglink to try to correct the issue. In the meantime you can opt yourself out of Viglink to make it stop inserting links by following the instructions in this thread: support.proboards.com/thread/654153/
In 2014, Hyde-Smith visited the Jefferson Davis museum and library. She posted a picture of herself on FB holding a rifle and wearing a Confederate hat, and she called it "Mississippi history at its best!"

So the best of Mississippi history is that time when they lost a war?

I'm all for public pressure and not funding racist assholes, but what about the outrage towards some of the awful men in the GOP? There's a large dose of sexism here that's rubbing me the wrong way.
Admittedly, I'm really fed up with the double standard in society and could be reading into to this too much.

It sounds like this woman has a long history of awful behavior. Why were these organizations donating to her in the first place?
Maybe don't donate to people with a history of racist behavior and then you won't have to ask for your donation back when they continue being a racist asshat?

I'm sitting here wondering if any of these companies actually research these candidates. Or do they but then when only under the microscope do they "care"?

I am not surprised so many have not received their money back. What I am surprised by are the companies that donated originally. It seems like an odd choice unless they were simply blanket donating to republican candidates up for re-election or for seats in jeopardy of flipping?

I think most of them blanket donate. They might not have gotten money back yet because the campaign might not have the cash to give back. They are prob paying off creditors (and staff) before returning money.
