This is the current plan for the master bath in our addition:
I think the bathroom would look a lot more open if the shower was half-glass on top, like here:
If we do that, however, the shower head would have to move to the opposite wall, and we'd lose the bench unless we did a corner bench on the closest right lower corner. Also, apparently they don't like to have pipes run along an exterior wall for fear of freezing, so there would also need to be about a 4" dummy wall built to hold the pipes. I'm also wondering where the shower controls would be...if they were under the shower head, you would have to step fully into the shower and get blasted with cold water to turn it on. Anyone see a solution here? Should I just build the knee-wall in front of the toilet high enough to put the shower controls on? I've heard of thermostatic showers where the shower temperature is set and then there's a separate on-off switch, but I'm not finding more about that.
We have a similar situation where you’d have to walk fully in to turn on the water at the main shower head. Our solution was a detachable shower head mounted on the exterior wall so that you can set it to turn on there and get the water right before stepping all the way in.
Although, we still haven’t finished painting the new bath so I haven’t used the shower yet to test out if this is a good solution or not!
Our shower on / off switch is mounted directly inside the door to the left on the wall. The temperature control is mounted under the shower head but you can adjust that to roughly where you want it before turning on the water. It’s only one handle / knob on the wall so you don’t really notice it.
This is exactly what we want! Do you know what brand it is, or what it's called? Googling just pulls up showerheads that have on/off switches on the handle. Does the piping run through the on/off switch and then to the showerhead, and if so was there an issue with turning that right angle?
So YMMV (note - I rarely shave because I did laser hair removal years ago). You could always buy a stool and put it in there later if you go without a bench now. Depending on what you finish the bench in (ours is a marble top to match our shower), it’s cold when I first sit down even when the water is on and the steam shower is running.
Thanks...that's what I was thinking, although a little corner shelf at foot-height for shaving would be good for me, and also I wouldn't care as much if it was cold when using it for that purpose.

I don’t know the name but I’ll see if I can find it in my paperwork. And ours doesn’t round a corner - our shower head is on the wall opposite the door. I can send you pics if that would be helpful?
Sure, pictures or any other info would be great! Do you think the on/off switch is not on the main water supply pipes? I don't even know how this works, but if it's on the opposite wall I would think it would have to turn two corners if it's all the same pipe?

We don't have a walk in shower, but our shower part is thermostatic. We have it set to the temp we want and then just turn it on and it heats up very quickly. We also have the fixed shower head focused downward so even if you start in the shower while in the tub, you won't get soaked (we have a handheld as well that we can direct any direction).
This is a pic just after it was installed - it's a big pic so you can see the details. I love it.
The top twisty thing changes which head the water comes out of, the middle one is the water control and the bottom is the temp (we pretty much rarely touch that one).

I will warn you, we had bench issues and they ended up putting my bench on the wall under the shower head and it sucks. I can’t use it for shaving under the water and it is always just cluttered with shampoos anyway. Also the tile is always cold so I never sit in there. I’m tempted to say put it wherever is aesthetically pleasing because you probably won’t use it much.
And I love my glass doors! I definitely think you will be pleased with that over regular walls
We have two separate controls for our overhead and handheld. We usually turn on the overhead to get the hot water to that end of the house and then can turn on the handheld once in the shower and angle it towards the wall for the couple seconds it takes for the hot water to come out.

Our builder just informed DH that a bench won’t fit in our new shower and I’m kind of glad. I think it takes up a lot of space and don’t like how cold they are. I prefer a small teak stool that can be moved where you want it and does eat up so much floor space.
add me to the "we never use our bench" camp - it's always chilly. The only time I literally used it was for my first shower post partum because I was too weak to stand the whole time. a teak bench would've totally worked better and I could've moved it to be in the spray of the shower head.
I did just a 4" deep shaving ledge that I love. I had it run the whole length of the wall so I can choose where to put my foot.
That sounds perfect! What is it made of? How high did you put it? Does it have any problem with collecting water? Having something like that along the right-hand wall side seems perfect.

The top is a marble slab that matches our other horizontal surfaces. I think they just barely sloped it down because it doesn't collect water (unlike the shower floor....)
