DOLPHIN is never on the menu. Mahi Mahi could be on the menu, also Not Dolphin. Are you saying DOLPHIN FISH is on the menu and people think it's dolphin? That's not true either.
Yup. THis. I don’t eat seafood but DH does and he said the same. Mahi mahi is dolphin FISH. It’s absolutely not dolphin. You don’t see that on a menu.
I'm in the Northeast and have never heard of that. I've seen mahi on the menu but never dolphin. I would definitely have questions if I saw dolphin on a menu.
Yes. I’m in Boston always lived in this area and see mahi mahi on the menu routinely, but only this thread did I find out that’s dolphin meat.
I’m clesrly not a big seafood person, mainly haddock and sea bass.

Wait, so there’s “dolphin fish” which is not A Dolphin?
Yikes. I didn’t know this until now. Not sure if I’m dumb or if it’s just because I don’t eat much if any seafood.

I had no idea that mahi mahi was called dolphin fish in other areas. I have never seen dolphin on a menu, only mahi mahi, both where I live in CA and when we visited hawaii. If I saw dolphin on a menu, yes, I would think it meant real dolphin so I wouldn't consider it common knowledge in most areas.
I did know that, I'm from Virginia but moved around a lot. I don't eat fish. I think I maybe learned it when I went to St Thomas with a friend when I was in high school maybe?
For the people that didn’t know, or said they would assume it was dolphin, what would you do? Would you ask for clarification? Give a bad Yelp review? Side-eye but sit there? Where would you draw the line as far as lovable animals go? Rabbit? Kitten? Baby monkey? Would you be like my MIL and sit watch your husband eat what you believe to be a beloved creature of pop culture?
Haha. I'm gathering that. I know for a fact that this has come up with my inlaws before. But we were out at dinner and fil seemed to have forgotten. Which brought up that sil and bil didn't know either. But what was funny was that dh was like "dad, the dolphin is mahi" and he had to verify it with the waitress like dh was telling him lies lol.

Do I know it? Yes. Would I expect someone to know it’s not Flipper? Yes. Would I expect them to know that dolphin = mahi mahi, probably not immediately. I’m from the NE but have spent a decent amount of time in FL due to family there, plus my H travels there for work frequently and visits the same restaurant for mahi/dolphin each trip.
I did not know it is mahi mahi and I have never seen it on a menu as such. I grew up in NJ and my parents ate like every kind of fish they could get their hands on when I was growing up and I had never heard of it. I only learned of dolphin as a fish when we stayed at the Swan hotel last year at Disney and I was reading up on its sister hotel, the Dolphin and the explanation of why the statues on top of the hotel are fish and not the mammal.
I think it's dumber to have "dolphin" listed plainly as that on a menu than it is to see "dolphin" on a menu and think it's an actual dolphin/Flipper.
I'm in CA and through many states have never seen "dolphin" on a menu.
Well dumb as it may be, it's very common to see it listed here as "dolphin" although technically I think the correct name is "dolphinfish" I have never seen it listed that way on a menu. It is always just "dolphin."

This! I am from New England and do like a variety of seafood. Never seen nor heard of Dolphin on a menu. I have seen Mahi.

You can fish for Mahi in Jersey!!
I have only seen is as mahi never listed as dolphin or dolphin fish.

Not that I’m judging I just love this thread.
I would probably just sit there and "pass". I might make a comment to my husband I'd he was with me but I also dont really judge what others eat so I most likely would not have even asked about it.
I also had no idea that Australians eat kangaroo on a regular basis. I recently learned about that from my niece who just did a semester abroad there and loved it. Her professors made it for them all for Thanksgiving.

I ate kangaroo at a restaurant in my boring town! It was good. I throw no shade - I just like hearing what people think.
I have never in my life seen “dolphin” on a menu. People eat dolphin? I’m so confused bc if it’s fish, usually the type of fish is listed. So....... idk
Also known as Mahi Mahi or Dorado (which is what is what H knew it as growing up in Florida).
