I have never in my life seen “dolphin” on a menu. People eat dolphin? I’m so confused bc if it’s fish, usually the type of fish is listed. So....... idk
Common knowledge where I live in Florida, yes. In the rest of the country, I wouldn’t be surprised if someone didn’t know.
I live in Florida so maybe this is why it is common knowledge to me then we were at dinner (here, in Florida) with two people from elsewhere and they were horrified Flipper was on the menu.
But I’ve seen it as dolphin fish and had conversations with horrified people. It seems rather barbaric and diabolical to use dolphin on your menu though.

I live in the Midwest and only know that “dolphin” is mahi-mahi/ dorado because DH is a fishing nut. He even prefers to refer to flipper-dolphins as “porpoises.” If not for DH, I might be similarly horrified.
The first time I saw it I had no idea it was the same as Mahi Mahi, but someone else said something and someone told him that dolphin fish = Mahi Mahi. But I also do t eat seafood, so it has never mattered to me.
I'm in Texas (and grew up in CA) and have never heard of this or seen this on a menu. I'd definitely be scratching my head if I saw dolphin on the menu, lol. Regardless, it's super weird to call mahi mahi, dolphin, lol.
I'm in the Northeast and have never heard of that. I've seen mahi on the menu but never dolphin. I would definitely have questions if I saw dolphin on a menu.

DOLPHIN is never on the menu. Mahi Mahi could be on the menu, also Not Dolphin. Are you saying DOLPHIN FISH is on the menu and people think it's dolphin? That's not true either.

Yes! Things get lost in translation- MIL was INSISTING FIL ate Flipper. She was having none of my dolphinfish explanation.

I know dolphin fish on a menu is not the mammal, dolphin, which is illegal to kill. Live in Atlanta, and don't eat fish very often, and virtually never, in restaurants.
Also grew up in FL, so yes, common knowledge around here- but, I have no problem understanding the confusion. I don't think anyone knows the origin of the name, it's a weird one!

I’ve never heard of dolphinfish, and also never seen dolphin on a menu. I would definitely be taken aback by it on a menu and not know what it meant. I’m in NJ.
