My brother skipped out on a long-planned family dinner last weekend. That, combined with a few other things, has me bummed knowing that we're just going to become more and more distant. I'm starting to get the impression that he's ashamed of us.

We decided not to bother with a Super Bowl party this year. We hosted one for over 10 years, but as our friends have gotten older it's been harder and harder for people to come and it has gotten smaller and smaller. I was fine with it until I realized that I can't justify making all the yummy stuff I usually make if it's just three of us, including DH who is on WW. (He'll have a cheat day on Sunday, but won't eat any leftovers.)
I thought I would lose some weight after starting Invisalign but I have not. I just shove all the food into my mouth while they are out. But I have cut back on sugary treats which I hope has longer term benefits and not just weight loss.
This article made me think of all the paper planner threads on here. I can't even count how many times I've ooohed and aaaahed over paper planners, gone as far as setting up the layout online, only to reality check myself that the every time I've actually purchased one, I've never gone more than a few months with it before going back to my google calendar/Keep notes, gmail and its reminders, and Evernote. I do love fancy planners though, I wish they weren't a waste of money for me.

They called school today and tomorrow and possibly Thursday as well (I'm a teacher). Today is our fifth snow day so far. Our wind chill tomorrow may be -50 and is pretty brutal today too. With all our snow days the past couple weeks, I am so stir crazy, that I left to go to Starbucks for awhile. Just walking about 20 steps from my car into the store made my face hurt! Yuck.

We are going to Florida in a few days, and I’m having a hard time packing for what will amount to a 120+ degree difference in current weather/wind chill where I live, to what it will be down there. Like, I know I should pack short sleeves, but I’m like...”is 75 *actually* that warm? Surely I won’t REALLY want to be in short sleeves and maybe a light jacket next week?”

Yes, you will! And yes, the Floridians will probably be bundled up in winter coats. It does get “cooler” at night this time of year so a light jacket or sweater is a good idea. Depending on where in Florida, you might want a little more than that (I’m in the panhandle and it’s going to be below freezing tonight).

I once went from working in the high Arctic to Orlando in September and had one day at home to pack. I brought everything since I had been in -20 temps the day before. I was so hot when I got to Florida. I think I instantly developed heat exhaustion (temperatures were around 100 though).
I have a job interview next week. Part-time, during school hours, at the courthouse as a judicial process assistant. Basically, a clerk that takes paperwork and fees and stuff. I'm excited. I've stayed home for the past seven years and this is right down my alley. I miss talking legal jargon or even having something to say at the dinner table beyond "the dog did this today. And I have to scrub the toilets tomorrow." It's not glamorous but I'm not looking for glamourous. I've been looking only sporadically and this (or in the office at the new elementary school) is a perfect fit for what I'm looking to do for the next ten or so years until we're ready to retire. :fingers crossed.
And yes, pack tropical for Florida. Bring shorts, tanks and light pants and a light sweater or jacket for chilly evenings. You won't be needing your parka...except for when you board and arrive back home.

You are me. I do the same exact thing. And every year I consider getting one only to realize that they are just a waste of money and paper for me.
I have never figured out how to utilize a paper planner while also keeping up with the necessities of digital, shared calendars. So I continue to trudge along with my cobbled together tools that help keep my life organized.
I love that article. Planners are somehow so interesting and compelling without actually being useful to me.

I am in Vegas this week (visiting my folks who came to escape winter for a few months, I apparently picked _just_ the right week to come down). Yup, 75 really is that warm. I only brought jeans and polo shirts, and have regretted that a few days on this trip when the temps have only made it to the high 60's.
That being said, it's been cool enough in the mornings and evenings that a light outer layer (my trusty flannel shirt) comes in handy here. Florida might not have as large a temperature swing, but it might not hurt to have _one_ light layering item.
My random - I feel a bit guilty about all the cold warnings I'm seeing on FB from back home. We're planning a light lunch out, and then maybe a wander along the strip to do some people watching and see some of the sights, and I'll probably be sweating in jeans and a light polo shirt...

"But now millennials are grown, sandwiched between their own kids and aging boomer parents."
They fucking left out GenX again. Fuck you, article writer!
As for the substance, I finally created a planner that I use daily.
I had the exact same thought. LOL.
I've been toying with the idea of a custom planner, but strictly for work project planning. I want this, but in a bound notebook:
And then I want either a 6 month view, a quarterly view, and then monthly view. Which would make the planner all of.... 20ish pages. So, generally not worth it.

I think I need a new job. I’m a manager, was hiring my 2nd in command. My boss (who knows nothing about my day to day, needs and the team I manage) selected the replacement without even consulting me (not my preferred candidate and he knew it).

This is the exact reason why my H is hoping to find a new job (well, one of several around his boss and others in his company). He has had very little voice in who has been put on his team and he feels disrespected.
simpsongal, That's bizarre and shitty. Have you talk to your boss about it?
when he told me his decision I told him the next vacancy he would have to fill was my position. I walked out. Also my pick was an internal candidate who will definitely leave. And our groups #1 challenge has been turnover.
We're having a belated holiday party at work tomorrow. We're doing a gift exchange and the theme was regift, i.e. bring something you got as a gift (or crap lying around your house?) for the exchange, or you can just bring a regular gift instead. I don't have anything around my house to bring in so I bought a gift. I have a feeling that whatever I end up with in exchange is going to be crap.
I'm loving my new state House representative. I'm thrilled with three bills that he's proposed.
One is to prevent employers from asking if someone has been convicted of a crime on an application. There are exceptions for jobs in certain industries. It doesn't prevent employers from running background checks. It was one of the promises he made to me when he stopped by. It was a priority to him to help prevent recidivism since lack of gainful employment is a big issue for people who have served time in jail/prison. He acknowledged that serving a sentence =/= guilt since a lot of people plead vs being convicted.
The second bill is on animal cruelty. The bill states that animal cruelty crimes should be seen as warning signs and opportunities for intervention. The bill would encourage judges who hear animal cruelty cases to mandate anger management or mental health treatment as part of the sentence. I understand that the hope is that early intervention will prevent future violent crimes against people. My hope is that it will prevent people with violent backgrounds from owning guns. It's a slippery slope we need. (You guys might remember that I got a postcard from a candidate who mentioned my cat. That was this guy.)
The third bill is to prevent garnishment of wages due to medical debt for low income people. Maybe, just maybe, we can stop kicking people when they're down and have had no/shitty health coverage and astronomical medical bills as a result. Garnishing wages from people who don't make enough to survive is cruel.
He's Latino and openly gay. I'm so glad to have his perspective and ideas in our legislature.
