What chapter books do your 1st-3rd graders like to read? DS1 and 2 are pretty much at the same reading level and are ready for chapter books, but I’m struggling with finding a good series. They HATE Junie B. Jones (they think she’s “mean”) but that’s about the level I’m looking for, maybe a bit above.

If they like 'spooky' things, Notebook of Doom and the Haunted Library are short series on that level. Also, My Weird School, the Wayside School books are good. If they like graphic novels, Babymouse or Captain Underpants. Mine also like Diary of a Wimpy Kid, but those are a *little* bit longer. Other series that are popular that my kids never got into are the Cam Jansen books, A-Z mysteries and Calendar Mysteries.
She hated Junie B Jones, Ivy and Bean, Magic Treehouse, and most beginning chapter books.
A friend turned her on to Dogman earlier this year and after that she jumped to the Classroom 13 series and My Weird School. She still likes those but is also discovering she likes non-fiction better and has gotten into The Who Was series.
Owl Diaries, Rainbow Fairies, Stink, Judy Moody, and Mercy Watson are all popular choices in her school.
There's definitely some low brow humor in it, but that's what grabbed his attention and actually made him excited to read them, so whatever. In one, a kid surprisingly "armpit farts" yankee doodle dandy for the school talent show. In another one of the kids would do a "shake butt" dance to the class anytime the teacher left the room...stuff like that. We discussed it, and DS knows this stuff is just for fun and something not to do in the actual classroom, lol.
We were introduced to this series by first reading one of this series "i can read" nonchapter books.
At that age my son loved Magic Tree House, My Weird School, and Jack Stalwart series (British series about a boy spy, available on Amazon). Also Bad Kitty(graphic novels). 13 Story Treehouse (there’s 3 books I think).

My DS is in 3rd. He has recently been engrossed in the "I Survived" series. It's historical fiction. He's learned about Pearl Harbor, 9/11, the San Francisco Earthquakes. DD likes an eclectic mixture. She likes Junie B Jones, but I don't. They hear enough bad grammar. We just started on Jada Jones. Jada is in fourth grade, and she's a strong female who's into science. So far all three of us like Jada.

My 2nd grader loves the I Survived series -- they get some history out of it too. She also likes Magic Treehouse, Ivy and Bean, Magic Fairies, Cupcake Diaries, and Dogman.

Dd is in third grade and likes these too. They are a quick read for her. Her favorite series now is diary of a wimpy kid.

At that age and reading level: - Magic Treehouse - Magic Schoolbus chapter books - A to Z Mysteries - Cam Jansen - Dinosaur Cove - Dragon Masters - Geronimo Stilton - Ranger in Time - I Survived
I am just now helping “make” DS1 (3rd grade, but much higher reading level) push from the shorter chapter books and into the thicker ones where the plot takes longer to develop. I think he’s slowly deciding that they are worth it. He’s currently working through the Story Thieves series.
DS2 (Kinder, but also reads very well) is tough because he loves animals SO much that he wants to only read about them. And we do have plenty of shorter nonfiction books that interest him, but I am slowly finding various chapter books that seem to intrigue him. As long as they have an animal involved. Lol.

It’s so hard. Lol. Elephants are his favorite. Do you know how creative we have to get with birthday and Christmas gifts after four years of intense elephant love? Haha. We are going to San Diego this summer and I can’t wait for the zoo and safari park! He’s been studying and admiring the maps ever since I told him.

Ditto to: I Survived & Dragon Masters. E liked Timmy Failure too; there are 7 of them, but E has only read the first 2. I didn't know there were that many.
I'm a middle school librarian, so I don't know ES titles as well as I do MS. These suggestions are great--thank you all!
DD (2nd grade) loves many of the books listed. A few others that haven’t been listed: The land of fake believe series, the Dino riders series and Billy and the mini monsters series.

DD loved this series, too. She read all of them over the summer. I wish there were more than just four books!
