I have a stronger opinions on what should be done with the children than the mothers. I think the western nations should try to get the children back one way or another. They’re citizens after all (at least the child of the American is). Rotting in a refugee camp will do nothing positive for those kids. As far as the mothers go, I feel like they made their own beds. However, I also don’t agree with them being treated differently than men.
If they are disputing the citizenship of the mother, they will certainly dispute the citizenship of the child. And the child may have other relatives elsewhere in the world, and citizenship in another country. Bringing them back could be another Elian Gonzalez-type situation (and the precedent for that is not great).
I completely agree that it would be horrible to let the kid remain in a refugee camp.
I, selfishly, wish the public had more information regarding her citizenship. If she is an American we need to take her back including a rescue by US forces. We shouldn’t be starting to determine which citizens we take back because of a crime. Other countries do that, but we don’t. I would be okay with her not serving, or a limited sentence, of jail time depending on if she could provide information on terror activities. Her husband needs to be denied citizenship but unsure how that would work legally. I also feel that she is still sympathetic to terror; which is a big problem.
There was an interview with her on the NYTimes podcast The Daily yesterday. I just listened to it this morning. Her case and others is certainly multi-faceted. It doesn’t seem as though any country knows what to do with these individuals and their children and does not know how to approach their cases.
The woman from Britain gets on my last damn nerve. She's so grating in her interview that's being shown on the news. She has no regret or remorse for joining ISIS. She's just bummed she's living in a refugee camp now that ISIS is falling and she thinks we should all feel sympathy for her. Bitch please. I feel sorry for her kid, but she can go fuck herself.
I have learned two things. One - I didn't realize that not everyone who is born here isn't automatically am American citizen. I thought that was the whole premise behind birth tourism and anchor babies. If you're born on US soil, you get citizenship. Interesting that there are actually exceptions. Two - One of the lawyers for the woman trying to return to the US is a guy that went to high school with my brother. I knew his parents because they both taught at my grad school and are always in the alumni notes for helping out in Syrian refugee camps periodically. This must be his niche as a lawyer.

Yes, she's doing herself and no one else any favours. BUT she's a teenager. And she went over at 15. She's probably a bit in arrested development and was groomed VERY heavily by the cult of ISIS.
