Arguing with my mom is a waste of time

DD was diagnosed with asthma and was prescribed an inhaler.
My mom hates inhaler and says that she didn't use hers when it was prescribed. She had another condition and the inhaler was temporary. She took some natural remedy that made her all better so she wants DD to start taking that and stop the inhalers.

Anyway, she is trying to make me feel bad because Im using the inhaler with DD. She says that a woman she knows has used inhalers for years and told her that the steroid in the inhalers made her all bulked up in her shoulders and chest.

Ok mom, I appreciate your advice (not really) but I decided to take DD's pneumologist recommendations. The she goes to tell me how I'm going to regret this decision when DD looks like a guy. I told her that she is basing her opinion on anecdotal evidence and that the fact that she only witnessed this in 1 woman, doesn't mean its true for everyone. The she goes on to say that most people using inhalers look like that. Ok I need you to clarify two things, first most is NOT a number, so is it 10, 20, 30%? Also where did you get your information from, was it a reliable study?

Even if bulking up is a true side effect, I think I will take that over an asthma attack.

I was already clear with her but the lady wont stop.

She does watch DD for around 1.5 hours a day while I get home from work. DD is taking her medicine early in the mornings and in the evenings so I'm the one who gives it to her. I'm mostly annoyed at the fact that she thinks she knows everything.

and unless your daughter is doing some weight lifting SHE AINT GONNA BULK UP! Steroids (the ones she's thinking of) don't just WORK. You still have to EXERCISE and it just increases the effects!

Oral steroids (pills) used for medical conditions DO cause weight gain and increase in blood glucose levels...but this has NOTHING to do with steroid inhalers for asthma. Especially for a child!

A) your DD is adorable and will not look like a guy
B) your mom is a nutter, please ignore her
C) I've been on and off different inhalers and breathing meds over the years. Your DD's health needs to come first and she needs to know to talk to you about side effects if she gets any. Inhaled steroids usually have a more local effect to the lungs. Oral steroids tend to have more side effects. Personally, oral steroids make me ragey, so I'd keep an eye on her mood and if she is getting in trouble in school if they ever make that switch.
D) there is no reason your DD can't be healthy, active, and gorgeous like her mom because she has an inhaler.

Does she know that Jenny McCarthy says vaccinations causes Autism? It totally happened to her son and she knows it was the vaccinations for a fact, so it MUST be true.

I did read about the side effects of the particular medication she is taking (salmeterol) and list some things but weight gain or bulking up is not listed there.

You should see her debating religion! We already know that is a topic to NEVER talk about with her.

Sorry this response is very late.

I've been on asthma inhalers for 25 years. I never gained weight from them.

It she gets sick an is put on prednisone thence she may gain weight. (which she will lose once she is off them.

These mess side effects out weigh the risks by a long shot. Ignore your mom!
