ESF , thanks for posting that. This was actually the first policy I've heard from Warren where I've not agreed with the approach she's outlined. I'm glad she's bringing attention to the issue. I agree that money will talk. But I think there are better ways to address the issue. Invest in bias training. Invest in POC going to medical school. Invest in midwifery and doula care for communities of color. I am not a WOC and certainly defer to their expertise. I will look up Kamala's position.
I just wish it weren't such a revelation to hear someone white speak about it.
How awesome is it that this primary includes a discussion of whether the white woman's or black woman's plan to improve women's health is better? THAT IS SO EXCITING!
It’s so depressing to see liberal women going all in on a male candidate. In 2019. When 5 women are running. Some of extrmeme caliber.
I KNOW! The are a few dudes I'm interested in having in the debates because I think they bring interesting perspectives or ideas: Castro, Inslee, Buttigieg, Yang. We can discount Tulsi, and boom, we have what should be a great eight-person debate. But I can't imagine going hard in the paint for a dude right now!
The only democrat to lose the popular vote in the last 30 years was the last white guy we tried running, John Kerry.
White men can’t win.
I'm 100% certain that Joe Biden will not win if he is the nominee, despite so many people support him because he's "electable."
Would he have won in 2016? Maybe. He claims he would have gotten more people in the rust belt, and he might be right, but there are others he might not have gotten who DID vote for Hillary. And the entire reason that he didn't run, and that very few people ran in the primary, was because it was Hillary's chance, and he would have gotten a ton of blow back for running against her, IMO.
There might be something to be said for the fact that he has a lot of name recognition and harkens back to a better time when we were living under Obama, since he's the candidate most closely associated with the administration. There's also the fact that several things from the Obama era still need work, like the ACA, and looking BACK to the last administration with a guy in his late 70s doesn't exactly scream "future of the party."
There are plenty in my neck of the woods who won't vote for the neoliberal corporatist who voted for the Iraq War and took money from Russia and China through the back door while he was Vice President and who is supported by big pharma and big banks and...(there's more but that's off the top of my head.)
The PBS article. Facebook comments are a shitton of "we need to move past this." And "She's out for revenge." and "She's getting paid."
Eff all who are making these comments.
She’s not looking for revenge she’s just living her life. HE’S the one who approached her, not the other way around. I would have been a lot more critical than this if someone used me the way Biden is currently using Hill. Apologizing after all these years, and oh yeah, declaring a ru. For presidency just weeks later seems totally sincere and remorseful.
Agreed. I'm not happy at all that he's using her in this way.
I attended a small group conversation with her about a year ago. She talked about her experience and her work following the hearings, but did not bring up Biden's lack of apology until someone asked about it. I was struck by how matter-of-fact she was, when she has all the reasons in the world to still be furious: she lost her job, was subjected to outrageous questioning, and had to endure old white men questioning her dignity. But still, she made it clear that no, she hadn't heard from him, and no, his public statements weren't good enough to address the societal harm caused by those hearings. I found her response here to be entirely consistent with her stance a year ago. Sure, she'd appreciate an honest apology from him, but he has done little to take responsibility for his decision not to take actions to ensure she was treated fairly. In fact, he's worked to minimize his responsibility and pay little more than lip service to the harm his decisions have caused over the years.
Anita Hill is a badass and doesn't need an apology from Joe Biden. But she has principles and she's not willing to let him off the hook with a half-assed "sorry"; it would go against everything that she has worked for to say "Thanks, Joe!" and move on. This isn't about her. She's seeing the big picture, and he can't or won't. He made that call to check off a box and nothing more.
This is an interesting read. I know a lot of people were excited by Warren’s plan, but this author describes some problems with it and believes that it will make the problem worse.
The author thinks Harris’s plan that she introduced last year, is better.
This article gets to something that’s been nagging me a little this week.
I love Warren but it’s too damn early to have a number one pick. All the women are having problems getting their ideas heard. Warren is gaining the reputation as the woman with a plan, which is going to destroy the other women in the race unless we support them.
If you have raved about Warren’s black maternal health plan this week without bothering to look up the plan by the woman of color in the race, the woman who has been actually pushing things forward in Congress on this issue, you are part of the problem.
I’m falling guilty to this too and haven’t sought out info on Gillibrand as aggressively as I should but I am really not ok with a primary that erases qualified women of color before it barely begins.
By all means, continue to support Warren. You don’t have to vote for Kamala or even give her money. But please don’t ignore her. Please help elevate her too. We need WOC’s voices in this primary more than ever. And we have a very long race ahead of us. Debates haven’t started. Vetting has been light. The world is practically on fire. We have no idea what is ahead of us. And I for one want to see more than one woman to make it to Iowa.
I as super excited listening to Warren talk about this issue, but I was really skeptical when I heard her plan. She likens it to knee surgery, which since bundled payments have taken an already pretty successful procedure and substantially reduced higher levels of care. I do think increased home care for PP women can be an positive of bundled services, but in general, they decline the level of care given and we need perinatal services to increase, not decrease.
Honestly this kind of thing is why I was surprised to see Symone Sanders join the Biden campaign. I don’t expect all staffers to never work for someone who has differences with former bosses. But Bernie’s whole comms team spent his entire campaign attacking Hillary for her ties to corporate America, and Biden is from the state with the most corporation friendly laws where a huge number of big financial institutions are based. That’s not an ancillary issue.
He announced a few weeks ago but I guess that was his exploratory committee?
He’s claiming to run on a gun control platform and also he’s making a big show about being the guy who isn’t afraid to go on Fox News? He even said he’d put Republicans in his cabinet.
Who looks at this current shit show and thinks Republicans should continue to have power?
One thing I will say about Castro - I get the impression that he's the candidate who cares the most about poverty. While the others really are focused on the middle class, Castro seems to have the most to say about the poor. There's a video on Twitter right now -- he spent time touring the underground tunnels in Las Vegas where the homeless people go to escape heat wearing a shirt that says Housing is a Human Right. It is a shame the media has ignored him.
ESF, has Castro gotten enough nominations to make it to the debates yet? I think he's really underrated. He's probably my top man running for President.

Currently my preferred ticket would be Warren/Castro. And I’m sure we could find good roles for many of the other candidates. Harris as AG seems a natural fit. Yang can be an economic advisor or Treasury Secretary. Inslee at EPA? Hickenlooper at Interior? I’m open.

I don't know, I hope he gets in. My candidates basically all fall into one of three categories: Fuck Yeah, Sounds Good, and If I Have To. The more I hear from him, the more he nudges out of Sounds Good and into Fuck Yeah. He was great at She the People. Given how much of the Dem base lives in cities, housing and gentrification are critical issues, and he gets them better than anyone.

As of 10 am yesterday, he's still 7,433 donors away.

I believe he’s met the polling criteria for the debates. There’s been some negative discussion on why he he continues to say he needs donors for the debates when he met polling criteria.

I think he's trying to play it safe because the eligibility requirements change if more than 20 candidates qualify. If that happens, he'll need both polling criteria and unique donors to get in. Also, requirements for future debates haven't been announced; so, again, play it safe just in case these numbers apply.
