I mentioned last week that we got a puppy and a few of y’all asked for a photo, so here is one of her playing and another of her “helping” me weed the garden. She’s adorable and never still. It’s ridiculous. A million puppy questions to follow.

So I haven’t had a puppy in 11 years. House training not going as well as I remember it from way back. She does mostly fine during the day but the nights she will just squat randomly mid-play, even if she’s just been out 15 minutes ago. She’s never unsupervised — either in her crate if we aren’t home, in the bathroom attached to H’s office with the pocket door open but gated so he can see her during the day or playing with us. She’s about 10 weeks old. Any tips?

librarychica, I recall being told to keep my dog on a leash at all times during the potty training process unless I was taking her outside to go to the bathroom. Maybe that will help?
I remember being told consistent treat reward when they go outside and pairing it the keyword “potty” or whatever you choose. That way eventually when you are in a rush and need them to go they will know what you are talking about and associate it with a treat when they are outside.

This is what I did with our old dog and what we are doing now. Hopefully it’ll work out if we keep at it.

I did this too. It worked well..accidents stopped after about 4 weeks.
We did the opposite of mustardseed2007 - leashed to go out to potty and went to the same spot in the yard, used the same words, training treats.
The charts with how long they can wait at different ages we’re really helpful to me with setting schedules. I set an alarm on my phone and took them out like clockwork.
Your new puppy is soooo cute!!! I LOVE corgi puppies! I'm actually thinking about getting a corgi as my next dog, so I will be paying attention to any tips and tricks you post!! I just want to squeeze your new little ball of cuteness......softly, of course!!!

Get one! This is actually our second corgi. Our first passed away at 11 last winter. They’re great dogs — I highly recommend them. First corgi was amazing when the kids were born and was just the most gentle dog and very mellow. They’re very smart and trainable, they want to please and are friendly. This puppy seems more typical to the breed, a little more excitable than our old girl, but we also didn’t adopt the first until she was an older puppy (12 or 16 weeks, i can’t remember) and we got this one as a tiny. They’re herders so prone to heel nipping and trying to keep everyone together and they need a moderate amount of exercise.
They’re so popular now that the rescue we got first corgi from estimated years, especially since we have an elderly cat and two kids, but I still hope to adopt an older brother for this puppy eventually.

I am seriously considering it! I am going to wait until after I finish my dissertation to get one. The crazy part of me wants to get two or three so I can have a little pack of corgis like the Queen of England!! I would love to adopt mine as well. I'm used to being herded from the Jack Russell I had for almost 13 years so that should fall in line quite naturally. I have a huge backyard that they can run around and play in to get their exercise inside a nice safe privacy fence. I just love their tiny legs and their fluffy little butts! So cute!!!
