I guess I'm a SS. I have 4 kids in my house at any given time ranging in age from 11 - 15. The two girls (12y/o) are allowed to have their phones in their room overnight, the boys (11 and 15 y/o) are not. The girls have earned our trust, the 15 y/o lost our trust, and the 11 y/o hasn't been given the opportunity to gain or lose it as of yet. The girls are full aware that any infractions will have their phones removed immediately.

DS is 13 and his phone is in his room with him - but plugged in and charged. One time in the last year has he been on it later than he was supposed to be and it got taken out of his room for a week.
My older son has difficulty sleeping without music, and uses his phone to access Spotify at night. There are no other electronics in their rooms at night.
They know that if they get caught with them (or if my older son uses his phone for anything other than Spotify at night), they will lose their access indefinitely. They also know I have access to all their social media, video, and texting accounts, and can check their usage at any time. They also have to hand their electronic devices to us whenever we ask, so we can check their usage and insure they haven't added anything we don't otherwise know about.
She says she can’t sleep without tv or music. I was thinking about maybe an old iPod with no WiFi capability?
Sorry I'm so late to see this, but this sounds like a good option. I also use Qustodio to monitor my sons' usage.

My DS is 12 and uses his phone as an alarm clock. I do shut his phone down at 10pm via FamilyLink, which still allows me to call and text him and his alarm to work, but he can't do anything else on it.

DS has his phone in his room, but it is because he falls asleep to music. We have family share on the phones and all other apps except the phone calling part disable at a certain time anyway, so I don't worry about it.
ETA: He also uses his phone as an alarm clock. He goes back and forth between my house and his dad's house and has to be up at different times at each because it takes him 30 minutes more to get to school from dad's house. The iPhone lets him set up alarms for each day.
