2chatter, I often tell my students I am Alex P. Keeton - they never have any idea who that is. But I am the complete opposite of my family. Very conservative with money, always a saver, not a spender (in fact, I was having a little pity party about the fact among our friends, we have very little toys, no boats, no pool, old ATVs, no camper, no lake property, no nothing, DH's reply was that if I didn't sock everything away so aggressively, we could have fun stuff.) I learned from my parent's bad example and do the opposite, a little extremely. Hopefully your DD will too.
My entire career has been based on the great benefits for insurance and retirement I currently have. This is due to the shock I received in my early 30s when my dad got sick. I was the one responsible and was SHOCKED to find out he dropped his insurance, had no retirement, no savings, nothing. I know that led to his not receiving the care that he needed. Plus, I will have my house paid off before my Mom and hers is 35 years old. My cousin one time told me that his parents has pre paid their funeral. My remark was my mom will be 80 trying to take our another 30 year loan.

waverly, sorry about your losses. Hopefully the rule of 3 applies and that is it for now. As for talking to the detective, just be cognizant of their time. Get an email address for follow up questions. Have contacts for other relatives that the detective may want to contact if necessary.
mellym , CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR NEW CLEANING PERSON.
For real, for me to fire help we have around the house takes a major act of incompetence only because it would feel like getting someone else would be a major deal. So I am very glad for you!
Ditto. We switched last time because I got into the habit of drawing hearts in the steam on the shower door for DD. And then I realized that those hearts were never getting cleaned... for weeks. And I started leaving test spots around the house to see if they got cleaned. And then I realized I was just being ridiculous.
New cleaners do bathrooms like champs. But they can't make a bed to save their lives. I've sent them photos of what a tucked in sheet should look like at the foot of the bed, and they've improved, but my grandma would be cursing if she saw it. But if I had to pick between the two, I pick a clean bathroom/kitchen any day.
On the topic of help, I need a new pool guy. But nobody I've talked to loves their pool guy. I think (as a generalization) people who go into the pool care business are not the most reliable or organized people.
sdlaura - we change every single season. Still looking for a company that can balance chemicals and do things like brush down algae. We either have sparkling water we can’t swim in or water that’s balanced but there’s green stuff everywhere. I am like you have one job....
mustardseed2007 and k3am, we did the test spots too! I happened to hear about these new cleaners on a neighborhood board and it turns out they're doing another house down the street from us. Fired cleaner still hasn't responded to me. I need to get our key back or change our locks now.
sdlaura, I was in the boot for six weeks as well. I'm 10 weeks post op. I keep telling myself to stay patient but it's hard when the weather is finally getting nice around here and I'm still laid up.

Update: Home Depot couldn’t pull off actually delivering my dishwasher. Again. I have cancelled, gotten my money back and ordered from Best Buy. Round two!
mellym, next time, don't give them your key. We have a lockbox like realtors use, so all we have to do is change the code. It was actually the requirement for our first cleaner - she didn't want to be responsible for having a key.
DDOT: Apparently the guy who did the quote for our drainage was really ambitious. He quoted us for 112 linear feet, and we only need 75! That saves us almost $1500. I've never had a contractor's work actually cost LESS than the quote.
