Dude is commenting on how he thinks they should have held back. Question - would he say the same thing if it was the men's team? Because that rubs me the wrong way coming from a white dude. Women don't need to play nice. They're there to win, not to be nice.

I missed that part, who said that? I thought they were saying they understood why they did not hold back.

It was at the very end when the panel of 5 (or 6?) people at the desk were talking. Some white guy on the far left was saying they should have help back, that it wasn't cool for them to keep pushing like that. Everyone else was like "fuck off dude."
My six year old was asking why they’re not holding back.
The commentators actually addressed this. I agree with the assessment that to hold back would be insulting.
We were watching the Telemundo coverage and my Spanish is sorely lacking (it was the only feed for the game on DirecTV Now's app). It was more of an innocent question on his part, I know why they didn't... but them flashing to the little girl in the stands crying broke my heart.

Oh, no, I totally get why your kid would ask that question. I actually understand why lots of people think that and was just saying that I'm glad the commentators addressed it and gave a reason why they weren't holding back.
The commentator after the game pisses me off because his remark came off as sexist to me. I have a hard time believing he would have made the same comment about a men's team. I expect more thought out of someone whose job it is to professionally comment on sports.
Don’t go to reddit. It’s an entire page of people complaining that the women were so unsportsmanlike to (a) celebrate their goals and (b) not give up at 0-6 and let Thailand gain a little ground.

😡😡😡
Oh fuck that.
Harris posted about their equal pay fight and a lot of the comments are similarly disgusting, suggesting that women aren't any good at sports and that they don't generate any revenue.

It's the same comments on every article about the US Women's soccer team on just about every platform, unfortunately, and I made a mistake by opening up the comments on Harris's post.
Commentators used to criticize the Patriots for running up the score the 2007 season when they were so dominant and didn’t lose any games. So it can happen to men, too.
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with playing as hard as you can. The total number of goals determines your ranking when two records are tied at the end of group play. What if the US held back, then Sweden, the other great team, went on to run the score one higher when they played Thailand?
I'm glad the US played their best game. It would have been even worse for them to pull back and play kick ball.
I've played soccer my whole life. US made the right call to keep playing at the highest level they could.
Do you pull back during a youth soccer game when you are winning 6-0? Yes. High school? Yes. College....er, maybe. It all depends on if goals scored affects your tournament placement. Often it can affect your next round.
But the World Cup? NO WAY. You play at your highest level the entire time. This is bigger than the Olympics for soccer players. Asking them to play anything less than their best is insulting.
And that commentator who kept interrupting everyone made me furious. No one would ever ask the NFL to stop scoring touchdowns. Or hell, even the men's US soccer team. The truth is, it made people uncomfortable b/c they are female athletes and they aren't "playing nice."
Those women worked their whole life to get into that position. They are there to win. Not to make friends.
Also these women just filed a law suit against USA Soccer for wage discrimination. You better believe they are going to play their asses off. Point. Proven.

I think some commentators were more upset with them doing what they felt was over celebrating goals even after 10 goals. I can understand that comment more than the holding back on scoring thing. As someone who coached a team who would get killed by other teams, I actually get it - I never wanted them to stop scoring but celebrating seemed insulting.

I don’t have a problem with them celebrating either. The goal differential has the possibility of dictating whether they move on to the next round. It’s a big deal and an important aspect of how points work in the tournament.
Further, they beat all previous records with that game. That’s worth celebrating too.
Pugh made her debut and scored her first World Cup goal. Don’t even tell me that wasn’t worth celebrating because she got it later in the game.
I feel for Thailand. It really sucks to get beaten like that. But they are a professional team. This isn’t a group of tween girls feeling sorry for themselves. We don’t suggest that businesses should be less celebratory when they kick ass and beat a competitor. Sports are business.
Nah. I have no problem with how they played and their reactions. And, frankly, it kind of pisses me off that this is being talked about in this way. I stand by my assertion that the conversation would not be this way if we were talking about the men’s team (who arguably suck compared to the women anyway).
