DD2 is having a pool party tomorrow afternoon. 130-430, so I hadn’t planned on a meal. I have tons of individual bags of chips, cookies, goldfish, Pirates Booty, and someone is bringing a fruit salad. I went individual due to a severe allergy and soggy hands in chip bowls. I also have Icee pops. I will have coolers with juice and water and seltzer.
Is this enough, or should I order pizza too?
Also, parents are staying so I was going to have chips and salsa and maybe hummus or a veggie and dip tray. Should I have wine and beer? I get a little nervous with drinking near the pool so I hadn’t planned on it.
More than the food - did you hire a lifeguard? When we don’t hire one, we have a water watcher tag on a lanyard - the person wearing it can’t be drinking, snacking, on their phone, etc - they are watching the kids.
We did fruit and veggies for the last party and no one touched them. It was the first time ever for that to happen. I’d have enough popsicles for the adults - we sometimes do fancy popsicles just for the grown ups - always a hit on hot days!
I feel like kids tend to get HUNGRY when playing in the water and sun. I would probably order pizza.
As for alcohol - I like having a drink when hanging out by the pool. My thoughts - just let the adults know that it's BYOB if they'd like to have alcohol. I just went to a party this weekend where the hostess did this and it was fine. She provided all the food and drinks for the kids.
What she didn't do, though, and I would encourage you to do - make a "no glass" rule. I don't worry as much about adults drinking as I do about glass breaking. Glass goes in the water? The pool may need to be drained. If you want to have wine/ think people will bring wine- then have an area that's on grass where bottles can be stored and poured into plastic cups.
Meh, with that timeframe in the afternoon I wouldn't worry about ordering pizza. It sounds like you will have plenty of snacks & drinks so I would think that's sufficient.
I would maybe tell everyone BYOB too if you don't have a problem with them bringing it. Definitely no glass!
I didn’t hire a lifeguard, but I made it clear that parents were responsible for their kids. And I imagine that I will have to step away to point people to the bathroom, etc. In those cases, I make it a point to ask one adult to watch my kid. That way, there’s no assumption that “someone else” is watching.
We have a strict “no glass” rule. I was going to get canned wine and canned/aluminum bottle beer. As trendy as craft beer is, there is nothing better on a hot day than a Bud Light in an aluminum bottle that’s been in a cooler full of ice. #klassy
So I think I will stay away from BYOB and just buy booze. We are having Fathers Day here on Sunday, so I’m not worried about it going to waste.
As for the pizza, there is a place nearby that delivers quickly. Ordering at that time of day shouldn’t be an issue, so I should just be able to make a game time decision and order during the party. They know us and bring it right out to the pool.

I went to a pool party recently that did not have pizza, just apps and cupcakes. It was totally fine. Having pizza also would have been totally fine because kids do get hungry, but it's not necessary.

DH is huge into beer and trying different kinds. If we're going out to eat or to some kind of event, he'll always look for craft beer or something he hasn't tried before.
But at the pool? Miller Lite is a go-to of ours!! Something about summer and the pool that calls for it.
We had a small pool party on Saturday. In the past, we’ve had pizza or hot dogs, and it’s always a bear to get kids out of the water to eat. This time we went snacks only, and it was great. The kids had their own plates on the table, and we set out fruit and chips, goldfish, and veggies. The kids ate a ton of fruit and goldfish. Then we gave them popsicles. Twice actually.
We did provide beer, wine in plastic wine “glasses” and waters.
