Does anyone have experience with headhunters either as an employer or a prospective employee?
DH needs a new job. He is a self-employed attorney and while he is successful, his business has become unmanageable. I think he needs help finding a job with a firm/corporate/government that I cannot provide.
How does DH/me find a good headhunter in his field? DH knows a headhunter personally, but this friend specializes in tech positions. Presumably DH could call this friend and ask for a referral, but I can see DH wanting to look under the radar.
Any advice for using a headhunter? Or any better way to find a legal job other than general job search engines?

What is he looking for specifically? In house, government or private practice? Typically the big firms work with specific legal recruiters. You should be able to find ones that are active in your region. I'd also reach out to former law school friends or others who are practicing to get feelers out there.

What I've found is there are head hunters who specialize in the legal field - in house and outside. When you get someone on the phone, they'll tell you what they do. One thing that in house firms will do is hire their outside lawyers, so his clients are a place to look unless he's a plaintiff's attorney, in which case that won't work.
Right now I'm looking for a baby attorney and we're probably going work with one or two head hunter firms. And it's kind of funny because eventually I may be looking so I'm watching them. Ha.

traveltheworld I think he is more interested in government or in house. Pretty certain private practice would be at the bottom of his list. I will suggest DH touch base with my neighbor's brother who is 20-years our senior and a partner in a local firm. They talk shop and I know the neighbor's brother will have lots of ideas.
mustardseed2007 DH is generally a plaintiff's attorney (he also does a lot of domestic law). Really interesting to hear in house firms will hire outside lawyers, I'll mention that to DH and see how he could use that information in his search. Good luck with your own search when that comes to fruition.
He can search for in house headhunters. We’ve used Major Lindsey and Africa to hire attorneys who were specialists. If he’s looking for a federal job, those jobs are advertised at usajobs.gov. The feds don’t use headhunters.

Thanks for the recommendations, I will pass them to DH. I check usajobs.gov almost every week, but nothing currently at his level (mostly paralegal).
greenmonkey1 - a few friends have taken jobs in DC and then been given work in place arrangements in their home city after a year. IDK if that applies, but I had dinner with a guy last night that they paid his DC relocation and he paid his relocation home and trips home on weekends. He worked remotely when needed, too. I am sure every federal agency is different, but it may be something to consider if it gets him in where he ideally wants - the potential of a sort of travel set up for a year with a planned return home.

That's an interesting proposition. I will have to check the DC options for fed jobs as well.
